GONE WITH THE WIND actress OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND dies at 104

Olivia De Havilland won two Oscars for best actress, "To Each His Own" (1946) and "The Heiress" (1949). She is most remembered as Melanie in the blockbuster film, "Gone With The Wind" (1939).

She was under contract to Warner Bros., during the height of the studio system. Performers were held to 7-Year contracts and forced to appear in any kind of role. If they refused, they would go on suspension and owed films after the 7-Year contract ended. Olivia went to court and fought her studio claiming actor's and actresses were "slaves" to these contracts. She won and eventually the studio system would end by 1960.

Olivia died of natural causes at age 104. She remained one of the last Hollywood stars of the Studio System. Kirk Douglas was her male counter-part who passed away earlier this year at age 103.

ELLA FITZGERALD: JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS is great gem of a life in song

ELLA FITZGERALD: JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS from EAGLE ROCK FILMS (2020). It is streaming online until July 31, 2020. Ella passed away back in 1996 and had spent most of her life singing in front of live audiences. This documentary shows us the dark-side of her journey filled with homelessness, starvation and struggle at Harlem, New York. She also faced "hardcore" racism as a black woman and an entertainer. She rose above it all with her singing voice that was a wonderful gift. She dreamed of becoming a famous dancer. That all changed when she sung-a-song on amateur night at the famed "Apollo" Theater. She was only 16-years-old who could never really look back after breathing that first note.

I'm a big fan of entertainment history that shows us the very, very beginning.... Silent Films (1900-1927). Sound Films (1927-2020). Vaudeville (Broadway) Theater (1850-1930). Jazz (1900-2020). Country Music (1900-2020).

In my opinion, Ella Fitzgerald was at her best singing the American Songbooks (Cole Porter / George & Ira Gershwin / Harold Arlen etc..,). She became an international star during the 1950's. I have too many favorites, but the one that resonates with me is "But Not For Me" by George & Ira Gershwin.

It would take several documentaries to tell the story of Ella's whole life in music.

'Secret Admirer' actress Kelly Preston dies at 57

Kelly Preston has died from breast cancer at the age of 57. She had appeared in numerous movie (Jerry Maguire) and TV (CSI-Cyber) roles.

In my opinion, Preston was a light comedian who never got those kinds of roles. She was hilarious in the 1985 teen comedy "Secret Admirer." I actually wore out the VHS tape of the movie. The decade of the 1980's had dozens of teen comedies which became a craze. Some bad and some good.... RIP Kelly Preston.
