1988 Mysterious Deaths of 3 Civil Rights Workers in 'Mississippi Burning'

MISSISSIPPI BURNING from ORION PICTURES (1988). This was loosely based on the 1964 murders of three civil rights workers. The production budget climbed to $15 million. It grossed $34.6 million at the US box office. The movie recieved 7 Oscar nominations and won for best "Cinematography." Upon the film's release. Activists in the civil rights movement criticized the film for its' fictionalized story.

Two FBI agents are sent to Jessup County, Mississippi to investigate three missing civil right workers. Rupert Anderson (Gene Hackman) and Alan Ward (Willem Defoe) are faced with oppostion when they first step into the county. Everyone in town has gone silent on the whereabouts of those workers. The sheriff's department even goes out of their way - not to cooperate.

Both FBI agents witness the open hatred against the black community. They even run into a Klu-Klux-Klan group who might consist of the town's most prominent white citizens. Three dead bodies are discovered who turn out to be those workers. The actual killers hide in plain sight and the FBI works hard to discover who they are.

I won't give anything away.... I saw this in a movie theater back in 1988. The controversy over the fictional storyline had pushed people into theaters... The real truth about the killings would take more years to unearth. The filmmakers brought us back to 1964 and the brutal racism that existed. A very powerful movie.

Review 'Naturally Native' 1998 hides main story under too many stories

NATURALLY NATIVE from RED-HORSE NATIVE PRODUCTIONS (1998). 1 Star Out Of 4 Stars.... I was asked by a friend to review this film because of the Native/Indigenous story. The screenplay was written and co-directed by Valerie Red-Horse. She also played the lead role of Vickie Lewis Bighawk. (Red-Horse is Cherokee).

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe (Connecticut) financed the production with $700,000. It premiered at the "Sundance Film Festival" in 1998. The interest was high because of the Native American cast of women. It grabbed no film distributor even after a screening on the Paramount Pictures lot at Los Angeles. It went straight-to-video with little interest. Red-Horse productions uploaded it free to the internet platform "Vimeo" in 2017.

A fan has uploaded it to "You-Tube" and it's receiving mainly positive comment reviews. It has received bad reviews though on the "Internet Movie Database" IMDB.

I think it's great that we had an all Native cast which was rare for 1998. You never saw this in mainstream movies nor on television. It's very different now in 2022 with the Internet.

"Naturally Native" tells the story of three native sisters who were adopted by "White" parents. They grow up and the oldest sister Vickie has the idea of starting a "skin-care"  business. It comes from the plants grown in the back yard of her home. She asks her two sisters to be partners, Karen Lewis (Kimberly Guerrero) and Tanya Lewis (Irene Bedard).

This main story gets pushed to the background throughout the whole movie. It veers off into native stereotypes and old cliches. An example is the "tired" native flute playing when the onscreen moments get "philosophical" and/or "serious." It's so "Hollywood" Indian that it's laughable. The cliches don't stop there either.

It also tackles issues of alcohol abuse, physical violence and a near date-rape scene. The endless list of issues is long too.... Plus, virginity and a wife's low-body self image. There is a bath-tub sex scene which comes straight out of a "Lifetime" movie. Why? It has nothing to do with the main story. All of these issues are never dealt with on any serious level. They are swept under the rug because of the next native problem. It tries hard to be a TV Sitcom too, but can't get out from under those countless and countless native issues.

Vickie's husband is a traditional Lakota Sioux who speaks his language in one scene. There is no English subtitles. We aren't supposed know what he says I guess. He never practices his culture either. Vickie is lost too because of her adoption. Yet, her tribe is right there in front of her and the sisters. Just reach out to them.

I don't have room to write about the Indian blood situation. The sisters are native who try to receive funding for their skin-care products. Why not just get a loan from a bank as start-up? Then - they magically receive $50,000 from their own tribe to wrap up a feel-good movie. Why go through all of the drama in the first place? The sisters only needed to ask their own tribe right from the beginning.

Check it out over at VIMEO for free.

Western Trailer 'Billy the Kid' premiere's on EPIX April 24, 2022

BILLY THE KID on EPIX. I love westerns and I will watch this because the trailer looks good. "Billy the Kid" fans are commenting online. It isn't favorable because they feel that this might be another Hollywood fiction story.

The real Billy was only 5'8" who has a boyish face. This trailer shows us a tall, handsome "stud." We'll see how it is.... Cool trailer though.

The 'Janet Jackson' 4-part documentary nabbed 15.7 million TV viewers on all social media platforms

JANET JACKSON on LIFETIME and A&E. Over two nights and four episodes. The life and career of the youngest Jackson member had grabbed huge viewing numbers. Miss Jackson had always been a private person. She is here too even though she talks about her life and extraordinary music career. As a fan who grew up with her. I'm just glad she opened up at all. I sat transfixed over the 4 episodes and wanted more.

What I found interesting was her struggle to find a lasting relationship with a man. It never worked because she was so successful. Janet tried her best to fit in any kind of relationship. She was so young when she first got married. It was sad to listen to her explain how she drove through the streets looking for her drug addicted husband.

Janet spent most of her young life searching for herself. She was so dominated by her father Joe that it made her determined to be independent. That spawned the "Control" album (1986) which brought her success. Then - she had to break out from under Michael with "Rythmn Nation 1814" (1989). It took a decade or more to become Janet Jackson with no one in front or behind her.

Despite the public impression of Joe Jackson as a hard taskmaster. We see through Janet's eyes how much he loved his children. He wanted a better life for them and to do that. He got them out of poverty. She knew that her career was built on those early years as "The Jacksons."

What I enjoyed was watching the never before seen camera footage. We got to see Janet as an ordinary woman. Plus, the private moments writing her own music lyrics. Watching both her and Michael writing "Scream" was great because they both had become so successful. He teased her and she laughed like a brother and sister do.

It was nice to finally hear Janet talk about those controversial moments in her life. She handled them well and never played the female victim. I don't think the media will ever stop "harping" on that Super-Bowl incident. Good grief - it was 18 years ago in 2004.... Beside's that. I am gonna watch this documentary again. Love me some Janet. :]

Lifetime will re-air "Janet Jackson" on Friday Feb. 4, 2022. Check it out.

Amazon Prime Video 'Jack Reacher' premiere's on Friday Feb. 4, 2022

REACHER on AMAZON PRIME (Feb. 4, 2022). It will star Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher which is based on the popular novels by Lee Child. Ritchson was cast to fit the role based on the books. He is blonde who stands at 6'2" just as Jack Reacher is blonde who stands at 6'5". Fans of the book series had criticized Tom Cruise as Reacher in two major films. He stands at only 5'7" and isn't blonde at all.

"Reacher" will begin its' 8-episode run on Feb. 4th.

Tom Cruise was highly successful as Jack Reacher. The first movie, "Jack Reacher" (2012) was based on the book "One Shot." It grossed $218 million at the box office with a production budget of $60 million.... The second film, "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" was based on the same title. It grossed $162 million at the box office with a production budget of $96 million.

Fans of the books are at least satisfied with the new TV series. The actor matches the character of Jack Reacher in the novels.
