There is a big difference between SAG-AFTRA staff & their elected officials. Staff & directors cannot leave their jobs to seek work as performers. Unless the rules have changed since I attended a SAG meeting on jobs within the organization. On the other hand, elected SAG-AFTRA members who represent performers can actively seek employment in the entertainment industry. Example: Amy Aquino is on the board & is working on the TV show BOSCHE for Amazon.com.
Those that wanted to work within the organization were specifically told that they could not leave their jobs for performances. Many questioned it, but that's the way it is. David White is the executive director of SAG-AFTRA & just got a raise increase reaching $600,000 a year. He is not an elected official...,
