THE SINISTER PIG by TONY HILLERMAN. Bernie Manuelito is now working for the border patrol because she made mistakes as a Navajo police officer. She has fallen in love with Jim Chee. Everyone around Jim see's that he has fallen in love with Bernie too, but won't admit it. A man is murdered on the edge of the Navajo border near some pipelines owned by a man of secrecy. Jim goes down to see Bernie who gets caught up with money & drugs. They seek Joe Leaphorn's advice who is supposed to be in retirement. Chee finally asks Bernie to marry him.
Bernie has become a strong female character with Hillerman. She & Jim were meant to be together. I thought Janet acted too good for Jim who treated her with respect. The Bernie character is the main focus of Anne Hillerman's book SPIDER-WOMAN'S DAUGHTER. I have not read it yet.
