Classic Movie Flashback 'Sharky's Machine' with Burt Reynolds 1981

SHARKY'S MACHINE from ORION pictures (1981). Burt Reynolds directed and starred in this police crime thriller. It's based on the novel (Sharky's Machine) by William Diehl. The production budget climbed to $17.5 million and grabbed $35.6 million at the U.S. box office.

The story unfolds when Atlanta police narcotics detective Sharky (Burt Reynolds) sees his drug meet and greet go sideways. He is forced to kill a drug dealer and Sharky is demoted to "Vice Squad." A hooker is arrested and Sharky discovers that her co-workers names have numbered "codes." It leads to a politician who is involved with a high priced "call-girl" named Dominoe (Rachel Ward in her film debut).

Dominoe's high rise penthouse is wire-tapped and Sharky secretly falls for her while watching with binoculars. A pimp and this politician visit Dominoe separately. A hired killer targets her, but he shoots a different call girl. Sharky investigates the murder as Dominoe goes into hiding.

It's too bad that Burt Reynolds didn't continue as a film director. He "helmed" a very good crime thriller for its' time 1981. The opening scenes are covered by excellent R&B music giving it a fantastic touch. It captures the time and place that are the streets of Atlanta. You don't hear music like this in movies anymore. The film soundtrack is a great listen.

1981 was long before "iPhones" and the "Internet." Police detectives had to work on experience, eye witnesses and most times instinct. That's what makes these kinds of police crime films interesting. Character is the key. It looks great on Blu-Ray and the soundtrack is astounding.
