RUTHLESS PEOPLE by TOUCHSTONE FILMS (1986). It starred Danny DeVito, Bette Midler, Judge Reinhold and Helen Slater. The production budget climbed to $13 million. It was a surprise hit at the box office grabbing $71 million.
The comedy was also a smash hit with VHS Home Rentals. (This was long before the Internet). My brother rented this video way too many times. I saw it in a movie theater.
The story surrounds a wife (Bette Midler) who is kidnapped by a naive couple. The wife's millionaire husband (Danny DeVito) is glad she was kidnapped. He waits for her brutal death. The husband is also targeted for blackmail by another crazy couple.
The comic performance here belongs to Bette Midler. She was under contract to do several films for "Touchstone" which falls under the "Disney" studio. Midler and DeVito believed that they gave bad performances. They didn't think the film had potential but they were wrong. It is a hilarious laugh riot.
