SNEAK PEEK: A New TV Season Podcast from 'Dateline' 2023
Dateline says, "The new season is upon us! New mysteries, extra episodes, new original podcasts and a big reveal… Josh Mankiewicz sits down with Andrea Canning, Dennis Murphy, and Keith Morrison ahead of our season premiere on Friday, September 29 at 9/8c."
SAG-AFTRA will meet with Producers on Monday Oct. 2, 2023
The Screen Actors Guild "Strike" continues, but will meet to negotiate with Producers (AMPTP) on Monday Oct. 2, 2023.
"As negotiations proceed, we will report any substantiative updates directly to you."
"We appreciate the incredible displays of solidarity and support from all of you over the last 76 days of this strike."
"We urge you to continue coming out to the picket lines in strength and big numbers every day!"
"One Day Longer. One Day Stronger."
"Your TV/Theatrical/Streaming Negotiating Committee"
The Writers Guild 'Strike' has ended after 73 days
The Writers Guild "Strike" has ended after 73 days. The Guild and Producers (AMPTP) have reached a tentative deal....
DEAR MEMBERS,
"We have reached a tentative agreement on a new 2023 MBA, which is to say an agreement in principle on all deal points, subject to drafting final contract language."
"What we have won in this contract – most particularly, everything we have gained since May 2nd – is due to the willingness of this membership to exercise its power, to demonstrate its solidarity, to walk side-by-side, to endure the pain and uncertainty of the past 146 days. It is the leverage generated by your strike, in concert with the extraordinary support of our union siblings, that finally brought the companies back to the table to make a deal."
"We can say, with great pride, that this deal is exceptional – with meaningful gains and protections for writers in every sector of the membership."
"What remains now is for our staff to make sure everything we have agreed to is codified in final contract language. And though we are eager to share the details of what has been achieved with you, we cannot do that until the last “i” is dotted. To do so would complicate our ability to finish the job. So, as you have been patient with us before, we ask you to be patient again – one last time."
"Once the Memorandum of Agreement with the AMPTP is complete, the Negotiating Committee will vote on whether to recommend the agreement and send it on to the WGAW Board and WGAE Council for approval. The Board and Council will then vote on whether to authorize a contract ratification vote by the membership."
"If that authorization is approved, the Board and Council would also vote on whether to lift the restraining order and end the strike at a certain date and time (to be determined) pending ratification. This would allow writers to return to work during the ratification vote, but would not affect the membership’s right to make a final determination on contract approval."
"Immediately after those leadership votes, which are tentatively scheduled for Tuesday if the language is settled, we will provide a comprehensive summary of the deal points and the Memorandum of Agreement. We will also convene meetings where members will have the opportunity to learn more about and assess the deal before voting on ratification."
"To be clear, no one is to return to work until specifically authorized to by the Guild. We are still on strike until then. But we are, as of today, suspending WGA picketing. Instead, if you are able, we encourage you to join the SAG-AFTRA picket lines this week."
"Finally, we appreciated your patience as you waited for news from us — and had to fend off rumors — during the last few days of the negotiation. Please wait for further information from the Guild. We will have more to share with you in the coming days, as we finalize the contract language and go through our unions’ processes."
"As always, thank you for your support. You will hear from us again very soon."

Classic Movie Flashback 'Police Academy' from 1984
POLICE ACADEMY from WARNER BROS. (1984). The production budget climbed to $4.5 million. It grabbed $81.2 million in the U.S. and $68.6 million at the Foreign box office. The world-wide total reached $149.8 million. Warner Bros. Pictures made a huge profit of $35 million. It went onto become the 6th highest grossing film of 1984. (movie theater ticket prices was $3.36).
It gained a whole new audience on VHS Home Video Rentals. The financial gross has not been made public. Back in 1984. Movies landed on home video after it hit or missed in actual movie theaters. This of-course was long before the "Internet." Customers had to walk into a store like "Block-Buster Video" to buy and/or rent their favorite films. Video stores are now extinct.
"Police Academy" was so popular that it spawned 6 more sequels (1984-94). The very first movie was the most profitable and the funniest of the entire series.
Synopsis: The Mayor of an un-named large city calls on all police recruits. The Academy sees the next batch of "misfits" inept and worthless. One teacher decides to make life "Hell" for all of these recruits. So that they quit the Academy. It doesn't go as planned when training begins and the comedy ensues.

Classic Movie Flashback 'Sharky's Machine' with Burt Reynolds 1981
SHARKY'S MACHINE from ORION pictures (1981). Burt Reynolds directed and starred in this police crime thriller. It's based on the novel (Sharky's Machine) by William Diehl. The production budget climbed to $17.5 million and grabbed $35.6 million at the U.S. box office.
The story unfolds when Atlanta police narcotics detective Sharky (Burt Reynolds) sees his drug meet and greet go sideways. He is forced to kill a drug dealer and Sharky is demoted to "Vice Squad." A hooker is arrested and Sharky discovers that her co-workers names have numbered "codes." It leads to a politician who is involved with a high priced "call-girl" named Dominoe (Rachel Ward in her film debut).
Dominoe's high rise penthouse is wire-tapped and Sharky secretly falls for her while watching with binoculars. A pimp and this politician visit Dominoe separately. A hired killer targets her, but he shoots a different call girl. Sharky investigates the murder as Dominoe goes into hiding.
It's too bad that Burt Reynolds didn't continue as a film director. He "helmed" a very good crime thriller for its' time 1981. The opening scenes are covered by excellent R&B music giving it a fantastic touch. It captures the time and place that are the streets of Atlanta. You don't hear music like this in movies anymore. The film soundtrack is a great listen.
1981 was long before "iPhones" and the "Internet." Police detectives had to work on experience, eye witnesses and most times instinct. That's what makes these kinds of police crime films interesting. Character is the key. It looks great on Blu-Ray and the soundtrack is astounding.
Watch the movie trailer below of "Sharky's Machine" 1981.

Movie Flashback 'Code of Silence' 1985 with Chuck Norris
CODE OF SILENCE from ORION pictures (1985). The production budget climbed to $7 million and was a box office hit in the U.S. grabbing $48 million. (Movie Ticket Price was $3.55).
It starred martial artist action-star Chuck Norris who was popular throughout the 1980's. Film audiences flocked into theaters to watch his best "Kung-Fu" moves. Most of his films were big on action and less on story.
(During the 1980's. Action stars were born every other year and films were made around each "star." This includes movies made for VHS Home Video. Sly Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger were the two biggest Hollywood action stars).
"Code of Silence" was a big surprise to Norris fans and critics because he was a hard boiled Chicago police detective (Eddie Cusack). A drug "Sting" operation goes wrong as criminals get away under Eddie's watch. A teenage kid is shot by a cop and there is a cover up. Eddie doesn't sign a petition supporting this cop and is shunned by the police department. Eddie has to figure out the connection to this drug deal that went sideways.
Of course - Norris does some action fight scenes. It is limited though because the crime story is more important on the streets of Chicago. The film has a gritty feel of cops, drug dealers, police informants and the city itself.
This is the best acting performance from Chuck Norris who portrays a real police detective. It's just too bad that film audiences never saw more of his talent as an actor... Norris went back to action films and moved onto his long-running TV show, "Walker, Texas Ranger" on CBS (1993-2001).
"Code of Silence" looks fantastic on Blu-Ray. Check out the remastered Film Trailer below.

Old Fashioned Horror of 'Dracula' with 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' 2023
THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER distributed by UNIVERSAL PICTURES (2023). The production budget climbed to $45 million and grabbed $19.9 million at the worldwide box office.
It is based on a single chapter of Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula" (1897). That chapter was called, "Captains Log." A small ship crew travels to London by sea and there is a vampire onboard. It sleeps by day in a dirt-filled crate. It seeks out blood to suck at night and grows into a beast.
The film screenplay was re-written several times since the release of "Bram Stoker's Dracula" (1992). Known actors and actresses were attached and dropped over two decades. Amblin Partners bought the rights to the lone chapter (2019) and filming began (2021).
There is a survivor and the beast vampire might still be roaming London. A sequel? I hope so because I enjoyed this movie a lot... Check it out if you can.
