Billboard Magazine's Top 20 Pop Hits of 1980

This is the last compilation of "Counting Down the 80's" in pop music. Wow, what a great decade of music which I lived through & will not forget. I actually liked all the 20 top hits here & believe me, I listened to-too-much radio back then. I remember each song and the words almost by heart.

What I recall is where I was when "Mount St. Helens" exploded in the Pacific Northwest. My home state is Oregon. My family & I were at a cultural Pow-Wow in Eugene, Oregon south of the mountain. The heavy Ash traveled east all the way into the state of Idaho & Montana.

In 1980, there was no MTV or music videos. So we relied on Live performances. SOLID GOLD was in its' first TV season in syndication on weekend's. It had all the singers, song-writers & rock bands who were backed by the Solid Gold dancers. (My favorite dancer was Beverly). Disco was pronounced dead that year too.

My favorite of the top 20 would probably be Michael Jackson's ROCK WITH YOU - Styx with BABE - Smokey Robinson with CRUISIN'. Boy, those were the days and I miss them. 1980's rocked!

13 part documentary "Hollywood" 1980 is fascinating look into Silent Films

HOLLYWOOD docu-series 1980. There is no DVD or BluRay of this wonderful 13 episode glimpse into the rise & fall of Silent Films. There is only VHS tapes & Laser Disc copies that are no longer distributed. But, I found Laser Disc episodes uploaded to YouTube & binge-watched all 13 episodes. It was great.

James Mason (veteran movie actor) provided narration. All 13 episodes gave us interviews with those that lived in the Silent Film era. The insight is fascinating. What I enjoyed was the evolution of film from its' earliest incarnation up to Talking Pictures. Movie director's evolved through visual artistry & their work stands up today 2016. - F.W. Murnau's SUNRISE was revolutionary for 1927. It was restored & is visually stunning. Janet Gaynor who starred in it was interviewed.

My favorite films so far are GREED 1924, BEN-HUR 1925 and THE THIEF OF BAGDAD 1924. My favorite male comedian is Harold Lloyd who was interviewed right before he died. He is Hilarious. Sadly, when Talking Pictures changed Hollywood in 1927. Many didn't survive which included some big movie stars. The enormous suicide rates were unbelievable.

This made me appreciate movies even more because it really was the beginning.

Keith Morrison hosted "Front Page: Steven Avery innocent or guilty?" on I.D.

Keith Morrison narrated a special "Investigation Discovery" report on the Steven Avery murder case. If you cannot get enough of the homicide of Teresa Halbach & the Netflix "Making a Murderer" with-drawl. This is for you. (Watch the full episode below).

"48 Hours" CBS Robert Durst to be extradited to California for murder

48 HOURS on CBS. Did you watch last night's episode called, "Murder 90210?" First of all, Robert Durst should have never made that 6-part documentary. What a stupid thing to do, but he wanted some of that celebrity from the Movie that was loosely based on his first wife's disappearance. He loved the notoriety that was based on him. Yet, the documentary showed that he possibly incriminated himself in the death of his friend Susan Berman at California. People love celebrity & that includes the Rich and he is the Rich-of-the-Richest.

The SAG Awards 2016 gives Diversity a big push with winners

The 22nd annual "Screen Actors Guild" awards embraced diversity tonight which aired live on TNT & TBS cable stations. Black performers like Viola Davis, Queen Latifah & Uzo Aduba took homes statutes. SAG-AFTRA union members reach past 100,000 & they voted for their favorite actor's plus actresses. This is a far cry from the Oscars where no ethnic performers were nominated in any of the 20 acting categories.

"Dateline" Steven Avery has a new lawyer who say's they have new evidence

DATELINE on NBC. Did you watch last night's episode called, "The State of Wisconsin vs. Steven A. Avery?" I only wanted to see what new interviews and possible evidence they might uncover. Somehow, I missed what happened with the prosecuting attorney Ken Kratz. He stepped down as District Attorney back in 2010 after being charged with Sexual Harassment in another case. He is now a defense attorney. Steven has a new lawyer who has ordered 2016 forensic testing of Teresa's SUV.

Two years ago, Morland and his female companion Sabina were both shot in an assassination plot. She died and he was injured badly that has affected his stomach. Oregon State Trooper takes down militia leader Robert "LaVoy" Finicum

In my home state of Oregon. This is an update for Friday Jan. 29, 2016. The video released by the FBI says it all. Robert Finicum drove a truck who stopped & waited for 3 full minutes before speeding away in an escape. There were other militia leaders in that truck. Finicum tried to turn left to get past a road block, but got stuck in a snow bank. Finicum jumped out, raised his hands as Oregon state troopers approached. He reached into his left pocket twice for a 9 millimeter semi-automatic gun. He was shot dead by a trooper.

All of this was recorded from a helicopter above the road blocks on highway 395 near Burns, Oregon. There are still 4 militia hold-outs camping at the Halfuer National Wildlife Refuge. 11 protesters are in federal custody. 40 occupants were inside the refuge when FBI set up road blocks earlier in the week.

All Finicum had to do was surrender, but he fled authorities in that truck. He died for a cause that was never going to succeed. None of these men & women are from the state of Oregon.

Oregon Standoff: Were the farmer's a militia group or just squatters?

News from my home state of Oregon. This is an update. The final leader Jason Patrick walked 6 miles to an FBI check point & was arrested Wednesday night. That left four inside the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge after a standoff with federal authorities since Jan. 2, 2016. A husband & wife dance on a video to a car radio to show the world their love. The man said that they just want to be "Free" with no "FBI" check points. That video is getting a ton of "Fat" joke comments.

None of these farmer militia group members are from Oregon. They all went to the town of Burns to support the two Hammond's who just went to prison for setting fire to federal lands. There is no report saying the Hammond's asked anyone to protest on their behalf.

As I looked at the recent video where the husband & wife remain. Were they just squatters? Most of the male leaders who are now in custody, have federal issues in their own home states. Did they see an opportunity to protest & live on federal land freely? It certainly didn't help their cause, but only to give a major headache to the state of Oregon.

ELEMENTARY on CBS. (S04E10). The new episode is called, "Alma Matters" which airs Thursday night at 10/9 p.m. The TV promo shows us that someone is trying to kill Sherlock's father Morland. Is it Sherlock himself? This is getting good.

Federal authorities lockdown Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon

From my home state of Oregon. This is an update for Wednesday Jan. 27, 2016. Federal police have now locked down all roads leading into the Mahleur National Wildlife Refuge at Oregon. On Tuesday night, Jan. 26, Robert "LaVoy" Finicum was shot & killed. He was the spokesman to the press when his leader Ammon Bundy wasn't present. Ammon's brother Ryan Bundy was injured after an altercation on Highway 395. Five others were arrested who are all now in federal custody.

None of these men are from the state of Oregon. There is now a new militia leader inside the wildlife refuge claiming on YouTube video that, "They're coming to kill us." Federal authorities want the rest of the illegal occupier's to surrender & leave the refuge safely. Bundy & his farmer militia took over the refuge back on Jan. 2 over federal land control.

Tuesday, January 26, 2016

2 Brothers who took over Oregon Wildlife Refuge arrested with 5 others.

In my home state of Oregon. It has been reported today Jan. 26, 2016 that Ammon Bundy, his brother Ryan, plus 5 others were arrested after gunshots. One person was killed on Highway 395 near Burns, Oregon. Ammon lead a militia group who took over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge back on Jan. 2. It is a fight over jurisdictional land control with the federal government.

Governor Kate Brown let the federal officials take over with the help of Oregon state police. She told local KOIN-TV news that she was concerned about the American Indian Pauite Tribal Artifacts that are stored inside that wildlife refuge.

The stand-off has cost Harney County & the state $100,000 a week. It's all because of Dwight & Steven Hammond who began their prison sentences for setting fire to acres of federal land in Oregon. The Bundy brothers don't live in Oregon & they brought all these farmer militia to the city of Burns. The Hammond's didn't ask them to do it either.

TV "Barney Miller's" Abe Vigoda dies at the young age of 94

The public thought he had died already which was widely reported. Those rumors probably began after Abe Vigoda's turn as detective Phil Fish on TV's "Barney Miller" (1974-82). He was an old guy who you'd think would fall over & die on the spot. Well, he didn't & lived to be 94-years-old. He just passed away 2016. He was part of an ensemble TV cast that actually had diversity. There were inner city ethnic characters seen & this was the mid-1970's! I enjoyed Vidoga's recent Superbowl commercials. RIP.

"Dateline" NBC an innocent man spends 18 years in prison

DATELINE on NBC. Did you watch last night's episode called, "A Bronx Tale?" It is a repeat, but still a story that needs to be seen & heard. Eric Glisson spent 18 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. All his court appeals are exhausted & he meets a nun who visit's his prison. She gets him in touch with a lawyer & his murder conviction is looked at again. What gets me mad is these police detectives who claim they never did anything wrong in their jobs - but they did.

"CBS This Morning" interview the 2 defense lawyer's from "Making a Murderer"

MAKING A MURDERER has been seen on Netflix around the world & it has become the most watched TV serial in its' history. Everyone is weighing-in on it. I can't wait to see Keith Morrison (Dateline NBC) host the Investigation Discovery episode. After the 10 hour documentary aired, Steven's defense lawyers are brushing off sex symbol status.

"Making a Murderer" has the Manitowoc sheriff's department looking like fools

MAKING A MURDERER on Netflix. I'm finally up to episode 9 of a 10 hour documentary. I'm watching very closely too. Back in episode 6 - Police found a fragment of a bullet which had a minuscule of blood you cannot see with the naked eye. Yet, there is no blood found in the trailer, carpet, floor, walls etc., That bullet was supposedly shot into Teresa's head. Steven and his nephew Brendan couldn't have cleaned up so meticulously.

Click photo for Making a Murderer at Netflix.
https://www.netflix.com/title/80000770

Episode 7 - The Manitowoc sheriff's officers shouldn't even be on this investigation. But, there they are. This Lieutenant Lenk kills me. After 7 searches of this small cubicle bedroom. Police find nothing, until Lenk appears and then all of a sudden there is Teresa's car key. Lenk is such a liar because he keeps blinking his eyes. Blink, blink, blink, blink!

Also, officer Colborn just sat on the witness stand scared Shirtless. No one believes that he didn't know Steven Avery was released from prison and then writes that report the next day. He should've written that report back in 1993 when he heard about another man confessing to the rape of the same woman Steven was convicted of raping. It's all right there on Colborn's face - on that witness stand.

The defense team is so smart and aggressive. They knocked the 6 murder counts down to 3 in Steven's trial. My favorite place is that press room where news reporter's get to the bottom of everything. I mean everything.

"The Graham Norton Show" 2016. Ice Cube is asked about the latest Oscar controversy over Black actors not being nominated in the acting categories. CBS "48 Hours" a film actor is caught 18 years after 1990 torture & rape

48 HOURS on CBS. Did you watch last night's episode called, "Live to Tell: My name is Victoria?" Unbelievable but so true and horrific. A woman is attacked, raped and tortured back in 1990. She survives and 18 years later. DNA from her rape matches to an actor from Hollywood.

Pam Hupp from "Dateline" episode had already spent the $150,000 in life insurance

DATELINE on NBC. Friday night's episode was called, "Return to Game Night." Russ was found not guilty in the second trial of the murder of his wife Betsy. Pamela Hupp was at the center of the first trial who helped convict Russ. She received Betsy's life insurance policy worth $150,000. She promised to give part of it to Betsy's 2 daughters. Pamela changed the policy 10 days after Russ's guilty conviction leaving nothing to those daughter's.

The daughter's sued Pamela in a civil case & now it turns out Pamela spent the money on a $150,000 home. The prosecuting lawyer against Russ was forced to testify in Pamela's civil trial. She saw Pamela bring into her office a bag of cash. The judge will make a judgement soon. Pamela admits to lying, but can't keep all her lies straight. (I personally think Pamela killed Betsy for that life insurance & framed Russ).

Native activist Sonny Skyhawk was asked to be an Academy member 2015

The Academy Awards unveiled their new members on June 26, 2015. You have to be invited & Sonny Skyhawk was sponsored by two Academy members. (You can be sponsored by members from different branches, Directors, Actors, Writers etc.,).

The Academy says, "To be considered for invitation to membership in the Actors Branch of the Academy, an individual must..,"
(A) "have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy, and/or
(B) have been nominated for an Academy Award in one of the acting categories, or
(C) have, in the judgment of the Actors Branch Executive Committee, otherwise achieved unique distinction, earned special merit or made an outstanding contribution as a motion picture actor."

Click photo for full list of 2015 new members.
http://www.oscars.org/news/academy-invites-322-membership
(Sonny Skyhawk far left. Chelsea Handler 3rd from left).

As the controversy erupted after the 2016 Oscar nominations. There was concern over Sonny Skyhawk. Five years ago, he appeared in "Nightbeasts" 2010. His only other actor credits jump back 27 years with "Geronino: An American Legend" 1993 & "Young Guns II" 1990. Sonny says he speaks on behalf of all Native Americans in films & on TV. He claims to have his Sioux Tribal papers saying he is of Native descent.

In "The Hollywood Reporter" during the "Oscar So White" 2016 controversy.

Sonny Skyhawk was a "sponsored new members" from last year. He came in as a Native American, but with only minor acting credits from 30 years ago. Who knows him? Skyhawk's real name is Charles Brito and he is of Mexican descent. He was one of those who was invited not because of his acting credentials, but because he had two people sponsor him as a Native American. Is this what the Academy calls Diversity?"

Skyhawk has done absolutely nothing as an actor. He got in because he got his two sponsors to believe he's Native American."

Skyhawk or Brito - Now has to follow the new rules as an Academy member which was revealed on Jan. 22, 2016. He can vote for 10 years. His last film was "Nightbeasts" 2010. If he cannot find work as an actor in 10 years. Then, he will be put on emeritus status. He can be a member, but cannot vote. Work in films for natives is tough and very sparse.

"Making a Murderer" The Defense of Steven Avery were top notch lawyers

MAKING A MURDERER on Netflix. I've viewed 7 of the 10 documentary episodes. Steven Avery's defense lawyer's are "Excellent" who have planted reasonable doubt in my mind. They were smart to move the Murder Trial from Manitowoc county away from the sheriff's department. That one Sheriff who handled Steven's arrest back in 1985 still hates the guy. Steven was exonerated by DNA evidence & didn't rape the woman. He spent 18 years in prison. That sheriff was questioned & doesn't believe the DNA evidence. He said on the witness stand, "It's possible" that some other guy may have raped that woman. It's personally - spiteful - after 20 years in 2005. Unbelievable!

https://www.netflix.com/title/80000770
  • Episode 5 - That blood vial of Steven Avery was saved from 1985. It was tampered with by someone poking a needle into that vial to remove blood. Did police take that blood & smear it inside Teresa's van? There were only 2 smears of Steven's blood in that van. He claims he was never in the van.
  • Episode 5 - A woman found Teresa's van in the car junk yard where Steven works. Holy Cow! She found it so fast in a 40 acre yard filled with thousand's of other cars. And she was only searching with her daughter. Why didn't a search team go with her? The van was up front & could be easily found. I don't think a murderer would just leave it at the front of a yard like that. If Steven killed her, wouldn't he crush the car with the equipment & hide it? He didn't even know the car was in the yard.
  • Episode 5 - The lead prosecutor came off stupid when answering questions from the press. It was about the joke Steven made about taking a female body & burying it. The prosecutor couldn't answer their questions. Steven's Defense made it clear that Steven made that joke long before Teresa even went missing. One reporter screamed, "What the Hell happened!?" after the Defense lawyer entered the press room. That was funny because they got no answers from the prosecution.

(Chris Rock is the Oscar host for 2016)

Academy statement, "Beginning later this year, each new member’s voting status will last 10 years, and will be renewed if that new member has been active in motion pictures during that decade. In addition, members will receive lifetime voting rights after three ten-year terms; or if they have won or been nominated for an Academy Award. We will apply these same standards retroactively to current members. In other words, if a current member has not been active in the last 10 years they can still qualify by meeting the other criteria. Those who do not qualify for active status will be moved to emeritus status.  Emeritus members do not pay dues but enjoy all the privileges of membership, except voting. This will not affect voting for this year’s Oscars."

"At the same time, the Academy will supplement the traditional process in which current members sponsor new members by launching an ambitious, global campaign to identify and recruit qualified new members who represent greater diversity."

"In order to immediately increase diversity on the Board of Governors, the Academy will establish three new governor seats that will be nominated by the President for three-year terms and confirmed by the Board."

Robert Redford stays out of the Oscar debate over diversity 2016

"The Sundance Film Festival" runs from Jan 21-31, 2016. The press conference to launch the festival had the media asking what Robert Redford thought about the Oscar debate over diversity. He stayed out of that debate by saying he concentrates more on the film work & Independence. (Good for him). Sundance is more about diversity than Hollywood will ever be.

"Elementary" CBS a computer software "Car-less Driver" kills 2 Hitmen

ELEMENTARY (S04E06) airs each Thursday evening at 10/9 p.m. Did you watch last night's episode? I usually try to write a lot in my TV recap except the real murderer. I left out Morland Holmes who had dinner with Watson. She discovers that he was shot in France & so was his girlfriend. She died & Watson believes that Morland was the actual target. She tells Sherlock that Morland is worried about getting killed in New York. This is getting real interesting.

"Dateline" Keith Morrison to host "Steven Avery Story" for Investigation Discovery

Check your local listings for "Investigation Discovery" at the end of January 2016. Keith Morrison from "Dateline" on NBC will host "Front Page: The Steven Avery Story." It will air new critical details on the death of Teresa Halbach with whom Steven was convicted of her murder.

"Making a Murderer" on Netflix provided a 10 hour documentary on Avery. It was one sided, supporting the defense team. If you are a "Dateline" NBC viewer. Then you know that they cover all sides to every murder case. This is perfect to have Keith Morrison as the host.

I watched episode 4 of "Making a Murderer" & Holy Cow! Those investigators bullied 16-year-old Brendan into a confession. They really worked on a mentally-slow-learner. I mean, he's a kid who can't figure out the meaning of a long word. He needed a lawyer present.

That phone call between Steven & his sister is sadly revealing. The crime is so much bigger than them all. Were Steven & Brendan smart enough to pull off that homicide? Now, in 2016. Those investigators are receiving the brunt of the media spotlight which they deserve. Unbelievable!

An all new episode of 48 HOURS Saturday Jan. 23, 2016

48 HOURS (CBS) each Saturday night at 10/9 p.m. Below is the Sneak Peek of "My Name is Victoria." Here is a synopsis, "A California woman who was kidnapped, tortured and left for dead reveals her extraordinary tale of survival and the hunt that led to an "Austin Powers" actor. Erin Moriarty reports."

CBS on YouTube usually takes down TV preview's after the episode airs. Just warning you. So, check it out.

"Making a Murderer" on Netflix is one-sided but very compelling

MAKING A MURDERER on Netflix is a very powerful documentary. I'm up to episode 5. It follows Steven Avery & his lawyer's closely, but doesn't follow prosecutor's and their side of this story. What it does show, is how law enforcement treats the poor like Steven. People blame him for his past acts, but he admits to bad behavior all the way. He makes no apologies.

Steven was thrown in jail after an attempted rape of a woman in 1985. He got 30 odd years in prison, but DNA cleared him who was released after 18 years. Lawmaker's could've gotten him out after 8 years, but never filed a confession of another inmate until Avery was released. I enjoyed the task-force interrogation of those that put Avery behind bars. You can see it in their eyes that they put the wrong man in prison. They tried hard to contradict their own statements that were recorded all those years ago. Their mistakes are now being seen by millions of viewers.

In episode 3 -- Two of the police who were interrogated by that task-force went into Steven's home. Not one investigator saw the key on the floor before those two went into that house. Steven's DNA is on that key, but he claims he never saw it & didn't kill Teresa who the key belongs to. Did police plant evidence out of revenge because they were wrong all those years ago? Teresa's car was found in Steven's business junk yard.

"The Mysteries of Laura" A murder suspect hold's Laura hostage

THE MYSTERIES OF LAURA (S02E011) NBC. Last night's episode was called, "The mystery of the unwelcome house guest." It was a 2-part episode which I thought was pretty good for the TV series. It keeps the fans glued to the digital television.

Elders want to see new movie with Robert DeNiro called "Dirty Grandpa"

DIRTY GRANDPA opens in 2,900 U.S theaters this Friday Jan. 22, 2016. It stars Robert DeNiro & Zac Efron. They take a road trip to Florida & all Hell breaks loose. Below is a video reaction from YouTube to the Red Band Trailer with foul language & strong sexual innuendo. The Elders react & most of them want to see the film. They think it's great. It's hilarious because of DeNiro.

An all new "Elementary" Thursday Jan. 21, 2016

ELEMENTARY (S04E09) "Murder Ex Machina." Sherlock goes to a strip club to get a lap dance & information on his investigation. The TV Preview is not from the official CBS YouTube. So, it will stay up after the TV episode airs. TV Promo channels are everywhere on YouTube & you can subscribe to them if you like. I choose the best one that is edited well as to show TV viewers & fans the greatest quality.

"Making a Murderer" is a popular 10 Hour Netflix Documentary

Everybody is talking about MAKING A MURDERER on Netflix. I mean everybody!

It is like SERIAL from one year ago which was a 12 episode podcast on the murder of a high school girl. The wrong man might have been innocent of that 1999 homicide. And because of SERIAL -- the man convicted has gotten a new trial.

I finished watching the first hour of the 10 hour documentary on MAKING A MURDERER It is Frickin' Fascinating! The possible corruption of the town's police & lawyers gets you angry. I will review the full documentary when I finish it

FX "The People Vs. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story" begins Feb. 2, 2016

TV critics were shown 6 of the 10 episodes of "The People Vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story." The season premiere will be Feb. 2, 2016 at 10/9 p.m. on FX. (Check your cable TV listings). Courtney B. Vance as (Johnnie Cochran) is getting the early good reviews & he looks aggressive in the TV teaser trailers. I want to see Kenneth Choi as (Judge Lance Ito). And I'm not talking about the "Dancing Ito's" from The Tonight Show either.

Whoopi Goldberg says don't complain about the Oscars once a year

The Oscar controversy is now escalating into anger & rage. Rev. Al Sharpton & rap artist Snoop Dogg have now jumped on the band wagon to boycott the Oscars in February 2016. Even George Clooney weighed in on the "Lack of Diversity" because not one black actor nor actress was nominated in the 20 acting categories.

Whoopi Goldberg who is a member of the Academy won an Oscar back in 1990 for "Ghost." She tells "The View" audience that it's not about voting for a white performer instead of a black performer. It's about the low profile movies with blacks that are never seen in good films. There is no distribution to support these fine performances. Whoopi says that why complain once a year? You should complain all year round.

Robert Redford wasn't nominated as best actor for ALL IS LOST (2013) because the producers of his film didn't campaign for him. They either had no money in which to campaign or felt they didn't need to push for an Oscar nomination. Critics felt he deserved a nomination. It all comes down to money to push these performances & that definitely includes Native American films.

PBS "Downton Abbey" Mr. Carson & Mrs. Hughes finally get married

DOWNTON ABBEY (S06E03). Mrs. Hughes doesn't have a nice dress to wear for her wedding day. That is a problem up until the special day. Lady Edith terminates her angry editor. A nice man helps her to meet a news deadline & is interested in her. She's considering on moving into her flat at London as a single mom. Remember, she took over Michael's newspaper after he disappeared & was supposedly found dead. He is the father of their daughter Marigold.

Thomas Barrow continues to look for another job. What he finds is that the employ of under-butler's is fading away. It might be the end of an era where the big family homes now have only one butler & one maid. 1925 is changing the landscape as prominent families begin to lose their houses.

The big news is that Tom Branson returns to Downton Abbey & surprises everyone at the wedding reception. Remember, he went to America with his daughter. He had a hard time transitioning from working downstairs to fitting in upstairs with the family. He bonded with Lady Mary who is excited he has returned
