MUSIC BOX from TRI-STAR PICTURES (1989). It was not a box office hit. It grabbed only $6 million in the U.S. It would later become a moderate success on VHS home video rental. Jessica Lange recieved an Oscar nomination as Best Actress.
In the 1980's - War Criminals who committed atrocities against Jewish people were "outed" and charged with "crimes." After World War II (1945). Many had settled into communites around the world including the U.S.
"Music Box" is loosely based on a true story about one war criminal from the country of Hungary.
Michael Lazlo had lied on his immigration papers 37 years before. He married and had two kids in the U.S. His daughter Ann Talbot (Jessica Lange) became a criminal lawyer. The name of Michael Lazlo was known by Hungarian Jews as "Mishka." The former commander of the "Arrow Cross" death squad. He tortured and killed Jewish families. There are several men named Michael Lazlo in the U.S.
Ann decides to defend her father in court before an appointed Jewish Judge. To see if there is a case to prosecute Michael by a jury. Ann does her job well in the defense. However - The testimony of Hungarian Jews who were tortured by "Mishka" brought reasonable doubt. Ann has her own questions, but she's got a job to do.
I will not give anything away.... Ann takes a trip to Hungary and visits a specific river. It was where Jewish blood had flowed during the War. Does she find the truth in the land of her ancestors?
