Classic Movie Flashback 'Friday The 13th' 1980

FRIDAY THE 13TH from PARAMOUNT PICTURES (1980). The production had an independent budget of $550,000. A bidding war erupted between Paramount and Warner Bros. Studios. It became the first Indie film to be snatched up by a major Hollywood studio. Paramount handled the U.S. distribution. Warner Bros. worked on the international side. The movie grossed $59 million at the world-wide box office. (Movie ticket price $2.69).

It's a simple story. Mrs. Pamela Voorhees returns to "Crystal Lake." She doesn't want the summer camp to re-open. Her son had drowned in that lake a few years back. Pamela blamed the neglect of camp counselors for his death. The new counselors show up and each one is brutally killed.

"Friday the 13th" spawned 11 movie sequels and started the Hollywood "Slasher" genre. Every year throughout the 1980's. Movie studios created new films that killed and/or mutilated beautiful teenagers.

"Friday the 13th - Part 2" introduced Pamela's grown son Jason Voorhees. He also returns to Crystal Lake to kill every teenager. His infamous "Mask" was also introduced and would become a pop-culture phenomenon.

Cable Television began in the early 1980's. HBO would air films after their theatrical run at the box office. "Friday" became a monster hit on cable-TV. It would later become a smash on VHS home video rentals.

The very first movie in the franchise made the most money. It was also the best in the series and the scariest. (Part 2 was absolutely hilarious).

Below is the Original 1980 Movie Poster.

Below is the 2009 music from the film. Jason's mask was introduced in Part 2.

Below is Paramount Pictures remaster of the original movie trailer 1980. It introduced on Blu-Ray and Digital Streaming. (Yes, that is Kevin Bacon).

Classic movie 'Lethal Weapon' 1987 with Mel Gibson & Danny Glover

LETHAL WEAPON from WARNER BROS. The production budget climbed to $15 million. It grabbed $120 million at the worldwide box office. (US movie ticket price $3.91). It stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as cop detectives who are polar opposites. One is borderline crazy and the other is a total family man.

During the 1980's. VHS home rentals were the rage. When a film finishes its' run at the movie theaters. It grabbed a new life on home video. "Weapon" was a huge rental and made even more money for Warner Bros. The buddy cop genre was revived with new actors.

The action crime film switched the family dynamic focusing on "black" characters. It was refreshing because minorities were categorized in a "box" with movies and on television. Roger Murtaugh (Glover) has a fun, normal, loving black family. Martin Riggs (Gibson) is an unstable white male detective whose job nearly drives him over the edge. It also helped that Riggs and Murtaugh had great chemistry despite their different personalities.

"Weapon" spawned 3 more movie sequels which starred Gibson and Glover. A TV series was created in 2016 which lasted 3 seasons on the FOX channel. A "Lethal Weapon 5" movie is planned but without its' original stars (too old?). There has been no announcement with the start of that production.

(In my opinion - The very first movie is the best. The second movie sequel is a close runner-up which has Joe Pesci who gives a great comic performance).

Classic '48 Hours' Podcast 'My Life of Crime' with Erin Moriarty

My Life of Crime, "On September 13th, 2006, a woman's body was found floating in Newport Beach Harbor in California. It was 56-year-old Barbara Mullenix, who had been stabbed more than 50 times--a sign detectives said meant she likely knew her killer."

"Detectives at first looked at her ex-husband Bruce, but soon moved their focus to her daughter Rachael and her boyfriend Ian Allen, as the evidence led investigators to an unthinkable conclusion. Erin takes you deeper into the '48 Hours' investigation - Lady in the Harbor."

Note: There is an update here and it is surprising. I remember watching this years ago.

Documentary on music duo 'Milli Vanilli' streaming on Paramount+

MILLI VANILLI on PARAMOUNT+. Luke Korem is the director and he goes deep behind the scenes. The main story is the rise and fall of two male dancers named Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan (Rob & Fab). The director claims that it took him one year to get Fab to interview for this documentary. Rob died from an accidental drug overdose back in 1998.

Both young men signed a music contract with a successful producer named Frank Farian (1988). They were told that neither were allowed to sing on the song, "Girl you know it's true." They only had to lip sync and dance to the R&B tune. It became a smash hit in Germany and around the world. That includes the United States. Arista records in America produced a new album surrounding that song. It spawned 3 more number #1 hits and sold 7 million copies.

The music industry found out that Rob & Fab never sung a note on the album. As the millions of dollars which poured in for Arista and Frank. No one said a "single" word. That is until after the 1990 Grammy Awards when Milli Vanilli won for Best New Artist.

Rob & Fab wanted to sing on the next album they were already contracted to do. Arista executives laughed and Frank said "no." He had already produced the album with other singers and rap artists. Rob & Fab forced Frank to hold a press conference where he said they never sung a note on the debut album.

Rob & Fab took the "hit" as Arista and Frank ran with the money. The duo lost everything in 24 hours and became a "Joke" in the music industry. What is interesting is that Frank did this before with the Disco group "Boney M" in the 1970's. The lead singer did a lip sync on every top hit. After Rob & Fab fell from the spotlight. Frank hired a new group/duo on that second album. They were called, "The Real Milli Vanilli." It was all so that he could make more money. This fake idea of great music fronted by beautiful "lip sync" performers.

Fab survived the scandal who stuck with it. He has become a very good singer. Rob couldn't handle the fall from the spotlight into obscurity. He died in a German motel at age 32. Frank Farian actually showed up at Rob's funeral. Did he really care even when he took all the money? He didn't want to be interviewed for this documentary.

The real singers on both those albums never got their recognition either. Except for the album credits. The Grammy Award Milli Vanilli won was returned. None of the artists nominated in that category were awarded that Grammy. It sits in the vault at the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

If you get a chance. Check this out.

Movie Screenwriter wins case on 'The People's Court' back in 2020

THE PEOPLE'S COURT from TV Syndication. It was cancelled in 2023 after decades with Judge Marilyn Millian. Repeat episodes are now running on YouTube.

The Writers Guild "Strike" just ended after more than 100 days. The writers got a new contract and their proposals were finally met by producers.

"The People's Court" had a segment about a film screenwriter who took his lawsuit to small claims court ($5,000). An independent producer tried to screw him out of his pay over the script he re-wrote. Judge Millian read both scripts and this guy wrote a "better" one (In her opinion). It was a family comedy and the producer thought his re-writes ruined the story idea. She even tried to "bamboozle" the judge with top investors and top actors attached to her movie.

This is a perfect example of how screenwriters are treated. Not only by big time producers, but by small time producers who really have no money at all. This goes on constantly within the entertainment industry and writers really do get the fuzzy end of the lollipop (so to speak).

Watch this all the way to the end.
