SAG-AFTRA union members approve Network TV Code 2018

(SAG-AFTRA logo).

SAG-AFTRA says,

"Members of SAG-AFTRA today voted to ratify the 2018 SAG-AFTRA National Code of Fair Practice for Network Television Broadcasting (Network Television Code). The vote was 93 percent in favor of the new contract."

"The ratification vote – via online voting and through requested paper ballots – follows the SAG-AFTRA National Board’s recommendation in July for members to vote yes on the new three-year contract with the four major television networks (ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox). Negotiations with the signatory producers began on May 30 in Sherman Oaks, California and concluded with a tentative agreement on June 9. Ballots were mailed to approximately 142,000 members. The contract term runs July 1, 2018, through June 30, 2021."

"I am gratified by our members’ vote of approval for this agreement. SAG-AFTRA members working in this area will benefit from stronger protections and meaningful increases in wages and residuals rates,” said SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris, who served as chair of the Network Television Code Negotiating Committee. “Moreover, the agreement now reflects important new language limiting auditions or meetings in private hotel rooms and residences, which helps us make tangible changes in the way our industry is addressing sexual harassment.”

"Added SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director David White, “This contract contains significant gains and protections for members working under the agreement. Dancers, singers, promo announcers, stand-ins, stunt coordinators and background actors will now receive stronger protections and increased wages that can be built upon in the future. I applaud President Carteris, our terrific member negotiating committee and our superb staff for securing these achievements in this negotiation.”

SAG-AFTRA investigates Commercial Ad Agencies

(SAG-AFTRA logo)

SAG-AFTRA says,

"On August 14, SAG-AFTRA announced the initial findings of an extensive, ongoing investigation into ad industry companies that SAG-AFTRA believed had falsely represented themselves as real employers of performers. This investigation confirmed widespread evidence of companies providing “signatory services” for a fee and falsely representing that they are the employer of performers on commercials. As a result, the union decided to revoke the signatory status of Executive Media Services (EMS), the fourth largest non-advertiser/non-ad agency company signed to the union’s Commercials Contracts."

"Today, SAG-AFTRA confirms that four more companies under investigation – Waving Cat, Talent Solutions, Talent Direct and CMC/Forecast – have also violated their obligation to serve as an employer of performers and that their signatory status could be revoked at any time. The union will keep all of these companies – and in particular CMC/Forecast – under heightened scrutiny due to their past violations of the collective bargaining agreement."

"Early in 2019, SAG-AFTRA will renegotiate our Commercials Contracts with the advertising industry. As we adhere companies to the new agreements, the union is determined to have a direct relationship with the actual employers of our members. Performers employed under a SAG-AFTRA contract should never have to worry about their safety on set, the risk of not getting paid for their work, or the responsible use of their performance."

"If you are offered employment by or have unpaid wages from any of these above companies, please contact Lori Hunt, SAG-AFTRA National Director of Commercials Contracts, at lori.hunt@sagaftra.org or (323) 549-6722."

I liked, 'Crazy Rich Asians' that is now in movie theaters 2018

CRAZY RICH ASIANS. First of all, I think it's great that this has a full Asian cast. The community has been mis-represented in mainstream Hollywood for decades. The last movie with a full Asian cast was back in the 1990's with "The Joy Luck Club."

It reminded me of the 1930's romantic comedies where there is a fish-out-of-water story. Film audiences have never seen Asians who are modern and also "filthy" rich. Thank God this is a studio movie who can promote this around the world. I thought it was funny with these great characters. Most of all though, I loved the family traditions that are still relevant and powerful today. I enjoyed the local Singapore street food scenes too. I'm a big fan of Michelle Yeoh (her martial arts) and that's why I went to see it. I'm glad I did. Go and watch it for just the cinematography alone that captured the country of "Singapore" beautifully.

According to "Box Office Mojo" that tracks movie receipts. As of Monday Aug. 27, 2018. It has nabbed $79,281,410 million in US Theaters. It has also grabbed $86,581,410 million at the world wide box office. The production budget climbed to $30 million.

Aretha Franklin's 'Ever Changing Times' was my favorite song

A TRIBUTE TO ARETHA FRANKLIN. There are too many songs that I have liked to post on this blog. I think the one song that I played the most was her duet with Michael McDonald, "Ever Changing Times" (1991). It was a throwback to Aretha's old R&B roots (1971). A tune with a depth-of-soul in changing relationships. She did it so well. Rest in Peace....
