2012 'Shenandoah' Documentary shows racism at its' worst

SHENANDOAH. This documentary will make you angry at a "white" culture and society refusing to admit to their own "racism."

Luis Ramirez was an illegal Mexican immigrant who lived in a former, coal-mining town called, "Shenandoah, Pennsylvania." He was beaten to death by four "white" high school football players. The local police defended those players and called it an accident. The players also made up a "story" and lied about what really happened. Two players were later convicted of simple "assault." Both received nine years in prison. The third player pleaded guilty and received four years in prison. The last player admitted his part in the beating, but only received probation. The last two also testified against the other two. None of them admitted that the beating was racially motivated.

The FBI got involved and several police were found guilty of trying to cover up the "murder." They were convicted and sent to prison. 90% of the white residents showed their true colors on-camera and it's full of "hate" aimed at Mexican people. The murder of Luiz Ramirez made them look at "themselves" whose own families are immigrants from Europe.

You can watch SHENANDOAH over at YouTube which was uploaded by a TV fan.

'The House of Suh' reveals a crime within a murder

THE HOUSE OF SUH (2010). A friend recommended this to me because she knows that I love a good murder mystery. When you watch the documentary trailer below. On the surface is a crime committed by a 19-year-old Korean "Golden Boy" named Andrew Suh. Underneath is another crime which threw me-for-a-loop. It was literally jaw dropping.

The most interesting thing here is the break down of a proud Korean family with culture as it's center. When the "Suh" family moved to America. Their lives fell into tragedy and then into a total nightmare. It revolves around Andrew who tried to honor his parents after they had died. There is a twist viewers don't see coming near the end. It is shocking and becomes a mystery that may never be solved.

You can watch the full documentary Here. A fan uploaded it to YouTube.

'48 Hours' Murder at 'Napa Valley' in the wine industry

“Grapes of Wrath.” Robert Dahl pulled a gun on Emad Tawfilis and shot at him several times. Emad ran away into the vine-yards at Napa Valley, California. Robert raced him down with his car and finally shot Emad dead. The dispute was over an $800,000 investment into the building of a winery. Robert had other investments with several friends and he robbed them of their money too. Was he just a wine inventor who loved grapes? Or was he a swindler con-man who dreamed of a certain lifestyle?

Netflix 'Who Took Johnny?' is a documentary mystery still unsolved

WHO TOOK JOHNNY on NETFLIX. I had this on my play list and had finally gotten around to watching it. I usually watch murder and mystery, but I've been intrigued lately by missing person cases.

West Des Moines, Iowa (1982). Johnny Gosch was just 12-years-old who on a Sunday morning was delivering newspapers. His dad usually went with him, but not this time. Johnny was abducted and has never been seen since. His mother Noreen spent 30 years looking for him and believes him to still be alive. There is no evidence of a crime and his body has never been found if he was killed.

Two years later in the same neighborhood (1984). Another teen boy was abducted while delivering newspapers. He was also never seen again. This opened doors of possible pedophilia and human trafficking in the city. Johnny's parents later received a dollar bill that said, "I'm still alive - Johnny Gosch" written on it. Did their son write it and was he being held against his will?

What's troubling about this case is law enforcement. The local police and the FBI just didn't do enough to find Johnny. Throughout the rest of the 1980's in West Des Moines. More kids were abducted and/or had gone missing. Some are even found murdered. What actually happened to Johnny? Is he still alive or was he killed? (Check this out if you can. It is quite compelling.).

I served on the SAG Awards TV nominating committee back in 2011. I vote every year and I have fun doing so. The DVD screener that never reached my mail box will not get a vote from me. Unless of course I already saw it in a movie theater. We'll see...,

I believe that a mail delivery man or woman has that DVD screener. I worry that movie piracy will happen and let's hope that film isn't uploaded to the Internet.

Netflix 'Bright' gets sequel after mega ratings around the world

BRIGHT on NETFLIX. It stars Will Smith and it premiered on Dec. 22, 2017. Netflix says that the movie nabbed 11 million TV viewers after just 3 days. They also claim that it is the number #1 movie in every country around the world.

All of this despite the bad reviews from critics across the board. Will Smith and Joe Edgerton will reprise their roles in the sequel that Netflix has just ordered. (It is on my playlist and I plan to watch it soon.).

Just a note: Netflix does not reveal TV ratings, but because of the draw of Will Smith. It's touting its' mega-viewership.

'Sioux City' 1994 is full of cliche-driven Native American stereotypes

SIOUX CITY (1994) Lou Diamond Phillips served as director and lead actor. He portrays a Native American named, “Jesse Rainfeather Goldman” who was adopted into a white Jewish family. He grows up to become a hospital surgeon. He receives a letter from his real mother, “Dawn Rainfeather” on the Indian Reservation. He goes back only to discover that she was murdered by a corrupt local sheriff in a nearby town.

It’s absolutely ridiculous and I barely got through it in one viewing. There are wall-to-wall Native Stereotypes throughout. The beautiful Indian Maiden-Reservation Girl. The wise old grandfather. The sweat-lodge and supposed vision quest. The racist white cops. The poor, alcoholic and downtrodden natives. It’s all there…,

I saw everything coming a-mile-away and it got laughable. Jesse of course has sex with Jolene Buckley (Salli Richardson) on a native designed blanket under the mountain that was stolen by the “white man.” Each have perfectly-shampooed-conditioned-long-black-hair too. He also gets age-old wisdom from his grandfather whom he never knew. Jesse even goes into the sweat-lodge and a 3-day vision quest, but doesn’t learn anything. He never plays detective to his mom’s murder either.

The only redeeming quality is the good cinematography. It captured those flashbacks of Jesse’s mom really well. I expected a compelling murder mystery, but got a cliché-ridden Native American story done a million times before. My Frickin' God!

'A Touch of Frost' is excellent TV crime drama

A TOUCH OF FROST is now on BRIT-BOX. It ran for 15 TV seasons (1992-2010) with each episode running no less than 90 minutes. At its’ most popular. The TV crime show grabbed nearly 17 million viewers. The final 2 seasons nabbed no less than 8 million viewers overall.

David Jason plays Detective Inspector Frost who relies on his instincts and hunches to catch criminals. Even when he deals with the start of the computer “Internet.” Frost is a cantankerous detective who comes off as a near comic character. His comedy comes from every day drama. What also makes him interesting are his new partners in almost every episode. I never thought solving crimes was this much fun.

I have 2 favorite episodes. -- “Fun Times for Swingers” (Season 4, Episode 3). Frost investigates the death of a male Gigolo. There are moments of hilarious laughter when the older male detectives uncover all the sex this Gigolo performs. – “Appendix Man” (Season 6, Episode 1). Frost tries to resign after one of his partners is killed. He is brought back to investigate the murder of an artist who has many alias names. It connects him to another murder that happened several years before.

You can watch “A Touch of Frost” for free on YouTube uploaded by TV fans. Or you can go over to BRIT-BOX and pay $6.99 after a 7-day free trial. With your subscription you can watch many other British crime TV shows.
