SAG-AFTRA dues extended for financially strapped union members

SAG-AFTRA News for March 30, 2020.
(SAG-AFTRA logo).

"LOS ANGELES — SAG-AFTRA today announced that it has developed a program to provide dues relief for SAG-AFTRA members during the COVID-19 global pandemic."

"Under the program, SAG-AFTRA members who are in a position to pay their dues in full are urged to do so upon receipt of their May semi-annual dues bill. Members experiencing financial hardship resulting from work stoppages related to COVID-19 will be granted a due date extension and an installment plan for those payments. As part of that relief, no late fees will be assessed and there will be no adverse impact on members’ work eligibility during this time."

"SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris said, 'As working people, we know the great difficulties our members are facing. In order to relieve some of the financial stress so many people are dealing with at this time, the Finance Committee worked to provide much needed relief.'”

“I also want to thank the Executive Committee for their rapid response and diligence in launching this program to quickly bring help to our membership,” Carteris added.

"With production slowed or halted across SAG-AFTRA entertainment, television and commercials contract areas, it is crucial that the union is able to collect the greatest portion of revenue possible to ensure critical services continue without disruption. Members who can pay on time are encouraged to do so when they receive their bills. Those members who require relief may request an extension of the May 1 due date."

"In light of the extraordinary challenges all organizations are facing during this global pandemic, the Executive Committee also approved a resolution designating the union as being in a status of resource conservation. This status ensures that SAG-AFTRA resources are exclusively devoted to essential, core functions, such as residuals payment processing, contract negotiation and enforcement, and organizing. During this period routine and non-essential meetings and activities will be deferred."

1990's country singer 'Joe Diffie' dies of complications from COVID-19

"Rolling Stone" magazine reported today (3/29/2020) that Joe Diffie died after contracting the Corona-Virus. He went into self-quarantine on Friday March 27, 2020.

I'm a big fan of Joe Diffie who I saw in concert back in the 1990's. He came to the New Mexico State Fair and rocked the Tingley stadium. During an encore song, he went around to shake hands with the fans. I became a lifetime fan. Rest in Peace....

Below is my top 5 favorite songs I played way too much....
  1. Pick Up Man
  2. So Help Me Girl
  3. Prop me up by the Jukebox (If I die)
  4. John Deere Green
  5. Third Rock From the Sun
(Sheet Music cover. Diffie rocked the mullet of the 1990's).

Judge rules 'Food Stamps' or 'SNAP' benefits will not kick off 700,000 in need

Nation Public Radio (March 14, 2020) says, "A federal judge has issued an injunction blocking the Trump administration from adopting a rule change that would force nearly 700,000 Americans off food stamps, officially known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. The rule change was set to take effect April 1...."

"In a ruling issued Friday evening in Washington, D.C., U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell called the rule change capricious, arbitrary and likely unlawful."

"The rule change would have required able-bodied adults without children to work at least 20 hours a week in order to qualify for SNAP benefits past three months. It would also have limited states' usual ability to waive those requirements depending on economic conditions. The preliminary injunction will preserve that flexibility...."

"In her ruling, Howell cited concerns raised by the spread of coronavirus and its effect on the most vulnerable Americans. 'Especially now, as a global pandemic poses widespread health risks, guaranteeing that government officials at both the federal and state levels have flexibility to address the nutritional needs of residents and ensure their well-being through programs like SNAP, is essential,' she wrote...."

"The change to SNAP is now blocked from taking effect pending the outcome of a lawsuit by 19 states plus the District of Columbia and New York City...."

The 'Drive-in' outdoor theaters make come back amidst 'Corona-Virus'

The American "Drive-in" has returned in 2020 and making money since regular movie theaters have closed.

Click photo from COUNTRY LIVING magazine below for news.
(1990's outdoor Drive-in).

Deadline Hollywood says, "Even with a majority of the nation’s movie theaters shuttered due to the corona-virus outbreak, and distributors holding back on box office reporting and new releases, there continued to be a handful of cinemas around the country that braved this weekend, and kept their doors open."

"And for that, they should be commended."

"Depending on the movie, there were between 79-135 theaters that remained open out of roughly 5K that are closed. Those alive were in such DMAs as Phoenix, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, St. Louis, Miami, West Palm Beach, and Nashville to name a few."

"And the theaters doing the most of what little business is out there? Yup, drive-ins again."

Movie Theaters across US closed with no film openings until April 2020

According to "Box Office Mojo" that records movie theater box office receipts. No new films will be released until April 3, 2020.

(James Bond movie rescheduled).

Box Office Mojo statement below:

"With the rise of global concerns over COVID-19, the film industry is just one of many in a state of upheaval. Announced today, both AMC and Regal will close all U.S. theaters, which totals over 1,200 between the two of them, for at least six to 12 weeks, effective March 17. In addition to theater closures, all the major distributors have been forced to move their upcoming releases, leaving something of a barren theatrical landscape looking forward."

"What began with the shifting of the release date for the next James Bond film - No Time to Die - from April 10 to November 8, soon became a tidal wave of date changes. Paramount moved - A Quiet Place Part II - from this coming weekend to an unspecified future release while Disney did the same with not only next week's release of - Mulan - but also shifting 20th Century's - The New Mutants Searchlight's Antlers - Marvel's Black Widow - The Personal History of David Copperfield  - The Woman in the Window."

"In addition to that, Universal moved - F9 - out an entire year and Sony shifted - Peter Rabbit 2 - from April to an August release. Universal has also already announced they will be making last weekend's new release of - The Hunt - along with - The Invisible Man - and Focus's - Emma - available On Demand as early as this Friday. The studio still has Trolls World Tour set for an April 10 release, with plans to go day-and-date in theaters and On Demand at home."

"All that being said, Box Office Mojo will continue to report box office numbers as they are received."
