MAE WEST: DIRTY BLONDE premieres on 'American Masters' PBS.

MAE WEST: DIRTY BLONDE from PBS. It premiered last Monday night (6-16-2020) on American Masters. I'm a big fan of her autobiography, "Goodness Had Nothing to Do With It" (1959). It was long after her movie career had ended with her last and most popular lead role in, "My Little Chickadee" (1940). She was way ahead of her time as a woman, a writer, an actress, and of course as sex symbol.

What I liked about this PBS documentary is that Mae West is still imitated in 2020. She has gained new fans among women and writers. She wrote her own plays for Theatre on Broadway and screenplays for films. I did not know of the TV interview she did from her home in Hollywood. It was the 1970's and they only showed tiny snippets from that interview. Her bedroom was filmed and may have included the mirrors above her bed. The interview has not been seen by the public. I would love to see it.

My favorite line of hers is, "I'm always good at night."

Mae West died in 1980 at age 87. She is still remembered and imitated in 2020.

JAWS movie celebrates 45 years and still scares movies audiences

JAWS from UNIVERSAL PICTURES. It was based on the best-selling 1974 novel written by Peter Benchley. The movie would become a box office smash for 1975 and thrilled audiences. It grossed a massive $470 million around the world. The production budget climbed to $9 million and maybe more when director Steven Spielberg went over-budget and over schedule....

It premiered 45 years ago on June 5, 1975 after several enthusiastic movie previews. Universal opened the film on 450 theater screens and bought commercial ads on the three major TV networks (CBS-NBC-ABC). There was also the merchandise tie-ins for kids that flew off the store shelves all summer long. It would become known as the first summer blockbuster. Movie studios would create summer blockbusters every year after that. Spielberg never took part in the 3 "Jaws" sequels that never measured up to the first film.

Happy 45th Anniversary to JAWS.!!

George Floyd protests urge networks to cancel police TV shows COPS and LIVE PD

COPS from PARAMOUNT. The live on-camera TV show had debuted on FOX back in 1989 and after 41 years. It has been cancelled in TV syndication around the world. No new episodes will be ordered.

LIVE PD from A&E. It has been the top rated TV program on Friday and Saturday nights. It had grabbed 3 million TV viewers each weekend and because of those stellar ratings. A&E had already ordered 160 new episodes, but it has all been cancelled.

Producers have not announced if these two shows will ever return to television....

The reason is because of the current images (2020) of police brutality across the U.S. All after angry protests over the death of George Floyd who is black by Derek Chauvin who is a white police officer. It was caught on camera and seen around the world. Derek was terminated as a police officer and charged with second-degree murder.

HBO-MAX removes 'Gone With The Wind' for now because of racism

GONE WITH THE WIND from MGM (1939). The epic film won 8 Oscars including Best Picture. It also became the biggest selling movie of all time. Hattie McDaniel won the best supporting actress Oscar who would became the first black actress to win the award.

The online streaming platform "HBO Max" removed the film from its' library - for now.... The reason is because of the film's depictions of Black Americans in the South. (The current murder of George Floyd who is black by a white police officer has influenced HBO to remove the film).

The movie still remains popular despite that removal. The online competitor "Amazon" has "Wind" climbing to number #1 in rankings and has sold out with DVD and Blu-ray copies.

"Gone with the Wind" is based on the best-selling 1936 novel by Margaret Mitchell. Two of the biggest female stars of that era turned down the role of Scarlett O'Hara. They were Katherine Hepburn and Bette Davis. British actress Vivien Leigh won the role after a year long search for Scarlett. Several up and coming actresses were screen-tested for the role. They included Lana Turner and Susan Hayward. Those screen tests are now on YouTube.

Black filmmakers criticize the romanticism of Blacks in the American South. "Wind" is set during the Civil War that eventually ended the slavery of Blacks.
