My 40 Favorite Westerns from 1930-1970

My Top Westerns are from the Hollywood Studio System (1930-70). These picks are ranked from 21-40.

Since I am Native/Indigenous. I have not chosen stereotypical "Indians" in any of these westerns. Unless they are used in a positive way.

#21) GOOD DAY FOR A HANGING (1959). A former lawman becomes temporary marshal. He arrests a young cowboy who killed someone during a bank robbery. This cowboy is convicted and will hang. He convinces the town that he's a good person and everyone turns against the marshal.

#22) RAWHIDE (1951). The Overland Mail Company has a relay station stop called, "Rawhide Pass." Several convicts take over this station. They plan to steal gold from the next stagecoach delivery.

#23) GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL (1957). This is historically inaccurate about the events leading up to the actual gunfight. Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday still put on their guns. It was a box office smash.

#24) 3:10 TO YUMA (1957). A poor desperate rancher, volunteers to escort a killer to a train going to Yuma. That's where the killer will stand trial for murder. His friends travel back from Mexico to free him.

#25) LAST TRAIN FROM GUN HILL (1959). The marshal's Indian wife is raped and murdered. The man who did it is the son of the marshal's good friend. He uses his money and influence to turn the town against the marshal.

#26) FACE OF A FUGITIVE (1959). A bank robber escapes from a train that was sending him to prison. He travels to a town where no one knows him. A "wanted" poster is sent by mail to this town with his face on it.

#27) STAGECOACH (1939). A group of people ride a stagecoach through Indian territory. Some individuals look down on the others with hate. Are they any better than the wild Indians? This western made John Wayne a movie star.

#28) ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1968). This is considered an epic western clocking in at 2 hours and 46 minutes. "A mysterious stranger and a notorious desperado join forces to protect a beautiful widow from a ruthless assassin employed by the railroad."

#29) CALIFORNIA (1947). A wagon train goes west in search of California gold. It changes the lives of many and that includes an unlikely couple. The "star" here is Technicolor film that is not used anymore.

#30) MAN IN THE SADDLE (1951). A powerful land baron forces a simple farmer into violence. It's over land that the farmer worked hard to keep.

#31) IN OLD CHICAGO (1938). A widow and her two sons make a life for themselves in Chicago. The sons are caught up in political corruption which leads to the great Chicago "Fire."

#32) TALL MAN RIDING (1955). A cattle baron viciously bull-whipped a man who was dating the baron's daughter. This man was run out of town who returns seven years later - seeking revenge.

#33) THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. (1960). This is based on the film "The Seven Samurai." This time it's set in the wild west. Seven outlaws are hired to protect a town.

#34) THE GUNFIGHTER (1950). A popular, but aging gunmen wants to retire. He searches for and finds his lost love who bore him a son. But - several young gunmen want to challenge him to the death.

#35) THE MAN FROM LARAMIE (1955). A stranger is hired as a ranch foreman. He runs into a powerful cattle baron who is going blind. The stranger comes in-between the baron's son and rifles being sold to Indians.

#36) A MAN ALONE (1955). A man comes upon a stagecoach where several people are murdered. He is accused of killing them and fights to clear his name in a ruthless town.

#37) THE TALL T (1957). A ranch foreman rides on a stagecoach with an heiress. Several outlaws take over this stagecoach. Can the foreman outsmart the outlaws?

#38) YELLOW SKY (1948). Outlaws run from soldiers after a bank robbery. They cross the death valley desert and end up in a ghost town called "Yellow Sky." A man and his beautiful grand-daughter mine for gold. A battle ensues.

#39) CORONER CREEK (1948). On a stagecoach. A woman is killed by a land baron. The woman's boyfriend vows revenge and it almost destroys his life.

#40) THE PROUD REBEL (1958). A father searches medical help for his mute son. They experience prejudice and the dad faces jail for beating a man. He has to pay a fine and the boy's excellent sheep dog might help them.
