Classic Movie Flashback 'Rita, Sue & Bob Too' 1987 from England

RITA, SUE & BOB TOO distributed by FILM FOUR INTERNATIONAL (1987). This was adapted from two theatre stage plays written by Andrea Dunbar. It's loosely based on her life. The movie is set in the working class town of Yorkshire, England.

It earned $1.4 million at the worldwide box office in US dollars. (Euro - 933,000).

The comedy/drama didn't reach the United States until 1988. I walked into an independent movie theater to watch it. US critics and audiences praised it.

The story is simple. Two teen girls are finishing up their school years. They are best friends who babysit for an upper class married couple. The husband propositions both girls in his parked car. They have sex and the comedy/drama ensues. Two separate social classes merge.... There is a scene where the husband cannot get sexually aroused with either girl. This was long before "Viagra." It is the saddest, funniest scene in the movie.

"Rita" was very frank about sex and the complications that come with it. Marriages fall apart and relationships struggle under its weight. This movie handled it with humor and never fell into "preaching." That's why it has become a cult classic. The 1980's fashion and attitudes look cartoon-ish in 2025. (That's how we dressed back then). But, the story is still very relatable.

"Rita, Sue & Bob Too" is now on BluRay. Check it out.
