Classic Movie Flashback 'Mona Lisa' 1986 with Bob Hoskins

MONA LISA distributed by PALACE pictures (1986). This was director Neil Jordan's debut movie. It starred Bob Hoskins who earned an Oscar nomination as Best Actor for 1986. The production budget climbed to $2 million and nabbed $4.1 million in the United Kingdom (England). The movie was first released in the United States. The box office numbers have not been recorded.

The story is simple. On the streets of London. George (Hoskins) finished serving seven years in prison. His old boss Denny Mortwell (Michael Caine) gives him a job as a cab driver and body guard to a high class prostitute. Her name is Symone (Cathy Tyson). Denny wants information on Symone's clientele so that he can black mail them. George and Symone can't stand each other until they search for her close friend. They begin to fall in love as the streets of London become more dangerous.

"Mona Lisa" was not a Hollywood studio film. It came out of London and was so gritty and real. It was nothing like the movies that came out of the U.S. I walked into an independent movie theater to watch it. Bob Hoskins was so good too. He deserved that Oscar nomination.

Check it out on BluRay. You won't be disappointed.

Below is the 1986 original movie trailer. Producers don't make them like this anymore.
