ANGEL HEART from TRI-STAR PICTURES (1987). It stars Mickey Rourke, Robert De Niro and Lisa Bonet. The production budget climbed to $18 million. It grabbed only $17.2 million at the U.S. Box Office and was considered a financial loss. The film was not released at the Foreign box office.
Before its' premiere in U.S. theaters - The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) gave it an "X" Rating. A particular scene involved too much sex and violence. Director Alan Parker trimmed off 10 seconds to recieve an "R" Rating. So that the movie could receive promotion in TV and newspaper advertisements.
Those 10 seconds were put back in for the release on VHS Home-Video. The Director's "Un-Cut" version. In today's terms - Those 10 seconds are pretty tame in comparison. But - This was 1987.
"Angel Heart" tells the story about a 1955 private detective named Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke). He is hired by a mysterious man named Louis Cypher (Robert De Niro). He asks Harry to find Johnny Favorite who is missing or dead. Harry's search has him traveling from New York to New Orleans.
Harry soon runs into dead bodies who were connected to Johnny. Their deaths are surrounded by "Voo-Doo" and/or "Witch-Craft" of Louisiana. It all engulfs Harry who becomes a suspect in one death or maybe more.
I will not give anything away... But - Watch everything very closely. There are clues. This is considered a cult classic horror movie. I look at it as a deep murder mystery involving religion, heaven and hell. I saw this in a movie theater back in 1987. That ending had me "reeling."
Check it out on Blu-Ray for "The Director's Cut."
