Classic Movie Flashback 'Sex, Lies & Videotape' 1989 with James Spader

SEX, LIES & VIDEOTAPE from MIRAMAX pictures (1989). This is an Independent film that was directed by Steven Soderbergh. It starred James Spader, Andie MacDowell, Peter Gallagher and Laura San Giacomo. The production budget climbed to $1.2 million and grossed a massive $36.7 million at the worldwide box office.

Long before the Internet. Independent movies had no chance at box office success against major Hollywood films. Independent theaters were only located in or near big U.S cities. They had a very low chance of making any money. Once in a while though. An Indie film hits it big with film-goers and distributors are forced to expand that movie into more U.S. theaters.

"Sex, Lies & Videotape" screened at the Sundance Film Festival (1989) that was created by Robert Redford. He wanted to support all Independent filmmakers outside of Hollywood.

"Sex" tells the story about an unhappy married couple. The wife is sexually repressed and her sister chases the husband. A male video operator comes along. He has an obsession with interviewing women and their sexual behavior. He ends up focusing on the wife and her sister.

VHS home video tape was all the rage during the 1980's. It changed the landscape of movies, television, documentaries and news. It even influenced porn films with their Independent productions outside of mainstream film products.

"Sex" looked into the behavior of females by a very confused male. It was fascinating to watch back then and it is still relevant in 2024.
