Classic Movie Flashback 'Ruthless People' 1986 with Danny DeVito & Bette Midler
RUTHLESS PEOPLE by TOUCHSTONE FILMS (1986). It starred Danny DeVito, Bette Midler, Judge Reinhold and Helen Slater. The production budget climbed to $13 million. It was a surprise hit at the box office grabbing $71 million.
The comedy was also a smash hit with VHS Home Rentals. (This was long before the Internet). My brother rented this video way too many times. I saw it in a movie theater.
The story surrounds a wife (Bette Midler) who is kidnapped by a naive couple. The wife's millionaire husband (Danny DeVito) is glad she was kidnapped. He waits for her brutal death. The husband is also targeted for blackmail by another crazy couple.
The comic performance here belongs to Bette Midler. She was under contract to do several films for "Touchstone" which falls under the "Disney" studio. Midler and DeVito believed that they gave bad performances. They didn't think the film had potential but they were wrong. It is a hilarious laugh riot.

Classic Movie Flashback 'Ghostbusters' 1984 with Bill Murray
GHOSTBUSTERS distributed by COLUMBIA pictures (1984). The comedy film starred Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver.
The production budget climbed to $30 million and the first theatrical release hit $282 million at the box office. It became a world-wide cultural phenomenon and Bill Murray became a major "comedy star."
The theme song, "Ghostbusters" was performed by Ray Parker Jr., and it hit number #1 for three weeks on the pop chart. It sold 3 million Vinyl Record Singles (45's). This was before Compact Disc and the Internet.
Columbia Pictures had no faith in a comedy about "live" men chasing fake "ghosts" in New York City. The production budget spent a lot of money on special effects for 1983. Looking back on it now. Those effects are pretty cheesy. It was eye-popping and fun when released in 1984.
The movie became a huge merchandise opportunity (comic books, video games, a clothing line, plus board games). The film's music video was a smash on cable TV with VH1 and MTV (There was no Internet in 1984).
The movie sequels didn't fare too well, "Ghostbusters II" (1989). The reboot, "Ghostbusters" (2016). "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" (2021) and "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" (2024)... None had matched the original comedy.

It looks so cheesy 40 years later in 2024. But, this song was "huge." It played all Summer on the radio and had heavy rotation on cable's MTV. The appearances of comedians, singers and actors are from the 1980's.

Classic Podcast '48 Hours' with Tracy Smith 'Daddy's Girl' 2010
CBS says, "On July 19, 2007, Timothy MacNeil, a prominent defense attorney, was shot to death in his San Diego home. The only witness was his 17-year-old stepdaughter, Brae Hansen, who was found tied up at the scene. She told police that a masked gunman had broken in and committed the murder but had left her alive. Further police interrogation of Hansen led to her arrest as a suspect, and she later implicated her brother, Nathan Gann, in the murder.
48 Hours - correspondent Tracy Smith reports. This classic episode last aired on 6/19/2010.
Note: This was just cold blooded and diabolical from a 17-year-old teen girl. Listening to her voice tells me she didn't care about her step-dad. Not one bit.

Classic Movie Flashback 'Sudden Impact' 1983 with Clint Eastwood
SUDDEN IMPACT distributed by WARNER BROS. (1983). It starred Clint Eastwood who portrays inspector Harry Callahan. The production budget climbed to $22 million and grossed $150 million at the world-wide box office. (Movie Ticket Price for 1983 was $3.15).
The story surrounds Jennifer (Sondra Locke). She is an attractive blonde who has revenge on her mind. 10 years before. She and her younger sister were raped by a gang of men. Jennifer tracks down each of these gang members and begins killing them one by one. Harry is assigned to investigate the first killing and discovers that he is tracking a serial murderer.
This is the 3rd movie Eastwood has played "Dirty Harry" as he is known on the police force. He ended his portrayal of Harry in the last film ,"The Dead Pool" 1988. It was also huge at the theater box office.
Harry is known for his wise-cracks and one liners. He topped everything in "Sudden Impact" with the phrase, "Go Ahead. Make My Day."
At the time - It was the most imitated line with fans, talks shows, news outlets and used in other films. There was even a song written with that line. It became a hit on Country radio with Eastwood saying the catch-phrase.
"Sudden Impact" is on Blu-Ray.

Classic Movie Flashback 'The Killing Fields' 1984 with Sam Waterston
THE KILLING FIELDS from WARNER BROS. (1984). The production budget climbed to $14.4 million and made $34.7 million at the box office.
It tells the true story of two journalists in the country of Cambodia trapped in a Civil War. They have to work and survive in war-torn regions. Sydney Schanberg (Sam Waterston) is an American journalist who covered news in that country. Dith Pran (Haing S. Ngor) is an interpreter associated with the New York Times newspaper. It is their strong friendship which anchors this powerful story.
The film was nominated with 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor (Sam Waterston) and Best Supporting Actor (Haing S. Ngor).
It won 3 Oscars including Best Cinematography (Chris Menges), Best Film Editing (Jim Clark) and Best Supporting Actor (Haing S. Ngor). He became the second Asian male to win an Oscar.
Sadly - Ngor was murdered outside of his home in Chinatown at Los Angeles 1996. It was an attempted robbery by three gang members.
"The Killing Fields" 1984 is now on Blu-Ray.
