Movie Poster 2026.THE MAVERICK QUEEN from REPUBLIC pictures (1956). Kino Lorber remastered this western from a 35 millimeter film print. It stars Barbara Stanwyck and Barry Sullivan. It is based on the book written by Zane Grey.
This movie is number #19 on my list of favorite westerns. It is now on Blu-Ray.
The story is simple. A lone gunman arrives in a small town called, "Rock Springs, Wyoming." He joins a gang called, "The Wild Bunch." Butch Cassidy and Sundance run this group of outlaws. The gunman meets a ruthless woman named "Kit." She owns most of Rock Springs and also runs with the wild bunch.
Republic Pictures tried to cash-in on the wide-screen trend of the time. "Cinerama." Republic called there's, "Naturama." This trend by the movie studios was created to compete with television. It was cutting into movie profits of the 1950's. Republic also used "Trucolor" just like "Technicolor." It was a gamble before Republic closed its independent company. The color film is no longer used.
The Zane Grey novel is more explicit and racist. It's toned down for this movie.
This is a cliche western like so many others. The difference is the location setting of Wyoming. (It was filmed in Colorado). The tall, steep mountains serve as the back drop and what beautiful scenery. It serves as a character in itself. It certainly comes alive on BluRay.
Barbara Stanwyck was known to do her own stunts in all of her westerns. She does again here. The big drop on the side of that ridge is scary and fantastic. She rides that horse straight down while being chased by Sundance. (Stanwyck was later inducted as an honorary stunt woman).
If you love westerns like I do. Check this out for Stanwyck and those great mountains plus landscapes. The people look so small but they survive in a wild country.

PRIME-TIME from A24. It stars Robert Pattison as Chris Hansen. The film is based on the NBC TV show, "To Catch a Predator."
"Predator" began as part of a segment on the series "Dateline" (2004). It was so popular that NBC gave it a TV spot in Prime-time (2007). It ran for only one season with 20 episodes.
I actually liked it on "Dateline." It was very popular. I think if it stayed on that show. It would've lasted longer. Robert Pattison is good in the trailers.

I walked into a movie theater here at Albuquerque to watch this. When I sit on the edge of my seat throughout a film. That means that I love it and I did with this movie.
The story is simple. Set in Detroit back in 1977. A gangster pushes his girlfriend around outside a nightclub. John (Ritchson) beats up the gangster. The girlfriend leaves with John. The gangster buys off a police detective to set up John. They plant drugs in his car and he goes to prison. John seeks bloody revenge.
This is almost a Silent Film from the 1920's. There is maybe 15 words of dialogue. It's all musical score with several 1970's hit songs. I absolutely loved it.!
What the audience sees are so many "emotions" from each character. We also see what they "think" and "feel" through body movement. It is a rollercoaster ride. I felt every emotion by each character and with the sound-track.
That elevator scene was bloody and violent. It was packed with anger, rage, pain, desperation, strength, hope and vengeance. My eyes focused in on that bloody knife stuck in the floor. The battle and struggle to use it was so intense.... Wow.!!
I cannot say enough about this. What a great idea from the screenplay writer. It turned out to be a "feast" for the eyes. Check it out if you can.

NBCTHE ISOLATE THIEF from HIDE-OUT pictures (2026). The tagline for this Western is, "From the Producers of "Old Henry" (2022). That movie is one of the best Westerns in the last decade. (In My Opinion).
"The Isolate Thief" opened in select theaters last July 10, 2026. It never came to Albuquerque theaters. So, I rented it from "Apple-TV." I'm a huge fan of Westerns and this is sooo... good.!!
The story is simple. A young woman is the owner of an outpost during the Civil War. She discovers gold coins. A group of outlaws show up searching for those coins.
As it unfolds. She hides the coins but doesn't tell the outlaws she had found them. The leader of this gang is smart who suspects she stole those coins. He doesn't let on what he is searching for and asks for her help. He knows, that she knows, the outpost area well. It's mind games that eventually lead to violence.
I love authenticity. Especially if the story is set in the old west. The filmmakers spent money on costume design and it shows. The Outlaws show up in blue-coats representing the Yankees of the north. Plus, the backdrop is the bitter cold winter. Wolves hunt the outpost hogs and thieves hunt for gold coins. This young woman is alone and she appears weak. She stays ahead of the game though. Watch closely because you can see her and the villain "thinking."
This reminds me of the classic Westerns from the 1940's to the 1960's. Great story telling.
As a Native-Indigenous male. I enjoyed the Native man who is part of this outlaw gang. He is dressed like them, talks English and his hair is cut short. He isn't the Hollywood western stereotype. A "Savage Indian." Of course, we don't know his tribe or why he's taken up with this gang. We don't need to know because it's all about those gold coins.
"Isolate" comes to DVD Sept. 8, 2026. Check it out. I recommend it.
Sean Bean and Mackenzie Foy. A scene from "The Isolate Thief" 2026.
