Classic Movie Flashback 'Return of the Jedi' 1983 with Harrison Ford

RETURN OF THE JEDI distributed by 20th CENTURY FOX (1983). This is the 3rd film in the first trilogy of movies, (Star Wars 1977 - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 - Return of the Jedi 1983). There are prequels and more sequels. Plus, stand alone movies and TV series.... Honestly, I lost count and only watched the first three films.

The 1983 "Jedi" production budget climbed to $42 million but grossed a massive $374 million worldwide. It became the highest grossing movie of that year. It was later re-released into theaters and the total gross climbed to $482 million.

"Jedi" continues the fight between the galactic empire and the freedom fighters of the rebel alliance. Luke Skywalker tries to bring Darth Vader back to "The Force."

Good Grief - I was 18-years-old in 1983 and I watched "Jedi" late in the summer. It was so much fun. A popcorn movie.

I actually never watched the "Star Wars" trilogy since and not even on VHS home video. Nor DVD and BluRay. I'd like to see "Jedi" again though.

Below is the original 1983 movie trailer.

Below is a news report on the 1983 opening of "Jedi." Those were the days when fans lined up for hours to watch their favorite films. In this case it was for "Jedi."

"The film relives the many stunning moments of Luther’s musical career, while exploring his personal life, health struggles, and a lifelong battle to earn the respect his music deserved."

The song came from his album, "Power of Love" that climbed to number #7 on the Billboard 200 Album chart. It also held the number #1 spot on the R&B album chart for 5 weeks.

Note: Out of all his songs. "Power of Love" is my favorite.

Classic Movie Flashback 'My Life As A Dog' 1988 Swedish film

MY LIFE AS A DOG distributed by AB SVENSK FILMINDRUSTRI (1985). The Swedish movie was directed by Lasse Hallström and was released into Sweden movie theaters on December 12, 1985.

It didn't reach the United States until 1988 and was a smash hit grossing $8.3 million in Independent theaters. I heard about it and walked into a popular "Indie" theater to watch it. I saw it two more times.

During the 1980's.... Foreign films that had very little distribution were released into Independent movie theaters across the U.S. They were never released by Hollywood studios unless they had bought the distribution rights. On a rare occasion some Foreign movies would become a hit in U.S. theaters. "My Life As A Dog" would become the largest grossing Foreign film of 1988.

The Swedish story is set in the late 1950's. Ingemar and his favorite dog get into a lot of trouble. Him and his brother are too much to handle. Their single mother separates them and Ingemar is sent to live with a distant uncle. The dog is also left behind and Ingemar sometimes "barks" at people. He meets strange characters in the town of his uncle including a girl (tomboy) who likes him. He begins to grow and change as his life as a dog disappears. He becomes a young adult. Ingemar and the girl (tomboy) belong together after she beats him up in the boxing ring.

This is my number #2 pick on my list of favorite movies from the 1980's. It's also my favorite "coming of age" film. I have never laughed so loud in a movie theater since 1988.

"Life" was nominated for two Academy Awards at the 1989 Oscars. (Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director). It won the Golden Globe award for Best Foreign film of 1988. It became so popular that a sequel was planned. It has never been filmed.... I think you should keep it just as it is even though I'd like a sequel. Only just to see where Ingemar is later on in life.

Click on the movie Poster below for the "Criterion Collection."

Directed by Lasse Hallstrom.

Classic Podcast '20/20' episode 'A Deadly Anniversary'

20/20 on ABC. This is and episode from the "True Crime Vault" titled, "A Deadly Anniversary."

ABC says, "A celebration of 32 years of marriage ends with Jim Melgar dead, and his wife Sandy accused of murder. Was Sandy a killer, or were police too quick to close the case? And can a podcaster with a virtual army of amateur detectives change a verdict?"

Originally Aired: 11/30/2018

Note: Listen carefully to come to your own conclusion. This is a baffling murder case. I think Sandy snapped because of her illness and epilepsy. What is interesting is that the evidence goes nowhere else but to her.

Documentary 'From Russia With Lev' premieres on Sept. 20, 2024 on MSNBC

FROM RUSSIA WITH LEV on MSNBC (2024). Rachel Maddow's new documentary spotlight's Lev Parnas who was at the center of Donald Trump's first Presidential impeachment (2020).

The broadcast premiere will be on Friday Sept. 20, 2024 on MSNBC at 9/8 p.m.

MSNBC says, "From Russia With Lev - reveals the outrageous scheme that led to former President Donald Trump's first impeachment."

"It follows the much, much larger-than-life journey of Lev Parnas, a Ukrainian-born hustler and former small-time mafia operator whose random, almost accidental association with Trump and Trump attorney Rudolph Giuliani took him around the world, and ultimately to prison."

"Lev reveals the ham-handed workings of the furtive campaign to dredge up false but damaging allegations against then-candidate Joe Biden."

Note: This is important to watch because Donald Trump is the Republican nominee for President 2024. He was cleared of his first impeachment (2020) by Republican votes. Trump tried to use his power as President to dig up dirt on his Democratic opponent Joe Biden.

Classic Movie Flashback 'Somehwere in Time' 1980 with Christopher Reeve

SOMEWHERE IN TIME from UNIVERSAL pictures (1980). It stars Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. The production budget climbed to $4 million and nabbed only $9.7 million at the U.S box office. Universal executives did not promote the movie. It is considered a "flop" and critics hated it.

Since its' release more than 40 years ago. "Time" has a huge Cult following. A fan-club was created in 1990 and they still meet in 2024. The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island (Michigan) is visited by fans every year. That is the place where "Time" was filmed.

The story surrounds Richard Collier (Reeve) who sees an old picture (1912) of a woman named Elise McKenna (Seymour) at the Grand Hotel. He takes hypnosis and travels back in time to meet Elise. They fall deeply in love. She is a popular actress and her manager believes that Richard might ruin her career. Richard then finds a 1979 penny and wakes up in the present time. Is he separated from Elise forever?

When VHS Home Video was created after 1980. "Time" was so popular that the rentals went through the roof. The movie was considered a "bomb" and wasn't re-released in movie theaters. I had finally seen it on home video and it is a romantic story. Cult fans like the idea of finding true love by travelling back in time.

The period piece looks great on Blu-ray.

Universal Pictures 1980. Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve.

Scott Adkins is a European action movie star who has been in "B" films. His fans want him to get to the next level. Big "A" pictures that don't go straight to online streaming. Back in the day... It was straight to home video (Hahahaha!).

I am not a fan because some of his movies are below his talent as an action star. The story lines are ridiculous or have been done before.

Scott's latest "Take Over" looks like it might be fun to watch.

Podcast 'The Vanished' episode 'Danielle Croft' just disappeared

"Hours later, he said he left home to walk to a local store. Along the way, he said he found Dani's clothing on the road. He continued to Dani's grandmother's nearby home to alert her, which was just the beginning of this strange tale."

If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Dani Croft, please contact the Bonham Police Department at (903) 583-2141.

Friday Night 'Dateline' with Josh Mankiewicz on Sept. 13, 2024

67.1 million Viewers tuned into Presidential Debate between Trump & Harris

PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE on ABC (Sept. 10, 2024). Former President Donald Trump and the current Vice President Kamala Harris had their first debate for President. It may be the only debate even though Harris wants another one and Trump doesn't. The general election for President is on Nov. 5, 2024.

ABC broadcast the debate live over 17 networks and nabbed 67.1 million viewers.

Harris is a former prosecutor in court and she prepared skillfully for this debate. Trump didn't prepare and actually "winged" it. He went down hill fast into deranged theories and lies. She stayed focused and presented herself in a professional way.

The fallout after the debate has many claiming that Harris "Swept the Floor" with Trump. That includes Republicans and Fox network hosts/pundits who support him. Trump is now saying that ABC moderators were to blame for his poor performance. Plus, the debate was "rigged" in favor of Harris.

If you missed it. Click the photo below for the complete debate between Trump and Harris.

Classic Movie Flashback 'Urban Cowboy' 1980 with John Travolta

URBAN COWBOY distributed by PARAMOUNT pictures (1980). It stars John Travolta who was very popular in the late 1970's and early 1980's. "Cowboy" is a modern western romance. The production budget climbed to $10 million and grossed $53 million at the box office. It wasn't as big as Travolta's, "Saturday Night Fever" nor "Grease."

"Cowboy" also starred Debra Winger (Sissy) who had incredible chemistry with Travolta (Bud). Their characters met in a popular country dance bar and got married. They broke up and got back together again. It is all surrounded by country-pop music.

The movie soundtrack spawned Seven top 10 billboard country hits. That includes the number #1 smash sung by Anne Murray, "Could I Have This Dance." It would later be played at weddings across the U.S.

The popularity of "Cowboy" got even bigger on Cable-TV and then VHS home video rentals. It went through the roof in sales. Critics asked the public, "Do you like Sissy or Pam?" Madolyn Smith portrayed Pam who steals Bud away from Sissy at this bar. Sissy then pairs up with Wes played by Scott Glenn.

Sissy's catchphrase in the movie became popular, "Are you a real cowboy?" She even has a sexy ride on a mechanical bull which also became popular in bars across the U.S.

I recently watched this and it is so "dated" but relevant in a few ways. Travolta's Bud is such a "baby" that he pouts a lot. It is a "hoot" to watch. I like Sissy but I choose Pam. (Hahaha.!!).

Below is the number #1 Country hit by Anne Murry "Could I have This Dance?"

Bud (John Travolta) had to do everything better than anyone else. Even dancing in a country bar.

Podcast 'The Vanished' episode 'Kenneth Ray Weaver' who went missing in 2000

THE VANISHED is a popular PODCAST online. It was supported by "48 Hours" (CBS) last year. I listen because most times people disappear because of abduction, kidnapping and a possible unsolved murder.

What's interesting about this latest missing case from the year 2000. The state border-lines separate police jurisdictions who squabble over investigation. It took years to even report on paper work for a missing man. Plus, the police aren't qualified to investigate missing people.

Kenneth went missing during Christmas 2000 and it could be a possible murder. It is a cold case that remains unsolved. There are no eye witnesses around from that year. Plus, the few witnesses don't recall what happened to Kenneth. There is no trace of where he is... IMO - his roommate is very suspicious.

Podcast '20/20' episode 'A Model Murder'

20/20 says, "An Instagram model's relationship with an older man turns deadly, and a witness provides a shocking account of the fatal day."

Eddie Murphy returns to 'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F' 2024

BEVERLY HILLS COP: AXEL-F on NETFLIX (2024). This is the 4th film in the series that began in 1984. It wasn't brought back into movie theaters and only streams online at Netflix.

I absolutely loved it.... I remember walking into a movie theater back in 1984 to watch the first film. It was long before the Internet when they had real "movie stars." Eddie Murphy was huge and people couldn't wait to see his next project.

The story is simple. Detroit police detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) travels back to Beverly Hills when his daughter's life is threatened. They have been estranged for years. Detective Billy Rosewood is also kidnapped and John Taggart is now chief of police. Axel-F takes over with action and comedy.

Most of the supporting players have returned. They're all a little older except for Murphy who looks great - 40 years later. The chemistry is still there too. Beverly Hills has not changed one bit either.

What I liked the most is the movie soundtrack which is from the first film. They added onto it with a blend of hip-hop sounds. I love the Axel Foley theme song. It hit number #1 on the Dance Chart and was big in nightclubs across the world. Plus, it hit #3 on the Pop Chart.

Fans will recall that this screenplay is very close to the first movie. They even made fun of "Beverly Hills Cop 3" which didn't do too well in the 1990's. I laughed out loud at that.

What a great nostalgic moment and Murphy is ready for sequel number #5.
