SOMEWHERE IN TIME from UNIVERSAL pictures (1980). It stars Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. The production budget climbed to $4 million and nabbed only $9.7 million at the U.S box office. Universal executives did not promote the movie. It is considered a "flop" and critics hated it.
Since its' release more than 40 years ago. "Time" has a huge Cult following. A fan-club was created in 1990 and they still meet in 2024. The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island (Michigan) is visited by fans every year. That is the place where "Time" was filmed.
The story surrounds Richard Collier (Reeve) who sees an old picture (1912) of a woman named Elise McKenna (Seymour) at the Grand Hotel. He takes hypnosis and travels back in time to meet Elise. They fall deeply in love. She is a popular actress and her manager believes that Richard might ruin her career. Richard then finds a 1979 penny and wakes up in the present time. Is he separated from Elise forever?
When VHS Home Video was created after 1980. "Time" was so popular that the rentals went through the roof. The movie was considered a "bomb" and wasn't re-released in movie theaters. I had finally seen it on home video and it is a romantic story. Cult fans like the idea of finding true love by travelling back in time.
The period piece looks great on Blu-ray.
Universal Pictures 1980. Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve.
