Classic Movie Flashback 'Urban Cowboy' 1980 with John Travolta

URBAN COWBOY distributed by PARAMOUNT pictures (1980). It stars John Travolta who was very popular in the late 1970's and early 1980's. "Cowboy" is a modern western romance. The production budget climbed to $10 million and grossed $53 million at the box office. It wasn't as big as Travolta's, "Saturday Night Fever" nor "Grease."

"Cowboy" also starred Debra Winger (Sissy) who had incredible chemistry with Travolta (Bud). Their characters met in a popular country dance bar and got married. They broke up and got back together again. It is all surrounded by country-pop music.

The movie soundtrack spawned Seven top 10 billboard country hits. That includes the number #1 smash sung by Anne Murray, "Could I Have This Dance." It would later be played at weddings across the U.S.

The popularity of "Cowboy" got even bigger on Cable-TV and then VHS home video rentals. It went through the roof in sales. Critics asked the public, "Do you like Sissy or Pam?" Madolyn Smith portrayed Pam who steals Bud away from Sissy at this bar. Sissy then pairs up with Wes played by Scott Glenn.

Sissy's catchphrase in the movie became popular, "Are you a real cowboy?" She even has a sexy ride on a mechanical bull which also became popular in bars across the U.S.

I recently watched this and it is so "dated" but relevant in a few ways. Travolta's Bud is such a "baby" that he pouts a lot. It is a "hoot" to watch. I like Sissy but I choose Pam. (Hahaha.!!).

Below is the number #1 Country hit by Anne Murry "Could I have This Dance?"

Bud (John Travolta) had to do everything better than anyone else. Even dancing in a country bar.
