King of TV Mini-Series 1980's 'Richard Chamberlain' dies at age 90

Richard Chamberlain (1930-2025) has died. He began his career in the golden age of television with "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" (1959). The TV series, "Dr. Kildare" (1961-1966) made him a "heart throb" on television.

In the 1970s - Chamberlain crossed over into movies with, "The Three Musketeers" (1973) which is a favorite of mine. "The Four Musketeers: Milady's Revenge" (1974). Plus, the disaster movie "The Towering Inferno" (1974).

By the 1980s - Richard would be labeled the "King of the TV Mini-Series." Back then.... There were only three major TV networks (ABC-NBC-CBS). Each network bought the rights to popular novels. They transformed them into a mini-series which crossed over multiple nights in prime-time television. Each production was a major event and would bring in massive TV ratings.

Chamberlain starred in "Shogun" based on James Clavell's novel (1980). It aired over five nights on NBC to critical and popular acclaim. He then starred in "The Thorn Birds" (1983) based on Colleen McCollough's novel. It aired over five nights on ABC. Chamberlain portrayed an ambitious Catholic priest (Ralph de Bricassart). He was committed to God and took a vow of celibacy. That is until he met Maggie Cleary (Rachel Ward).

"The Thorn Birds" was so popular in the TV ratings. It re-played on the ABC network a few more times to solid ratings. It would later play on Cable-TV bringing in more viewers. It also became a huge VHS Home Video rental. (When the DVD came out. There was a "Making Of...," documentary which was "gold" for all of the fans.

Rest in Peace... Richard Chamberlain.

Western Trailer 'Rust' with Alec Baldwin in theaters on May 2, 2025

The Western movie "Rust" was filmed at Santa Fe, New Mexico up until Oct. 21, 2021. Alec Baldwin served as producer and the lead actor in the film. On the set. Baldwin fired a prop gun that was filled with real bullets. The cinematographer Haylna Hutchins and director Joel Souza were both shot. Haylna later died and Joel was seriously wounded.

The movie was shut down in Santa Fe. The production later moved to the state of Montana.

In 2023. Charges of involuntary manslaughter were aimed at Alec Baldwin and the on-set armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. She handled all prop guns for this Western and was found guilty. The charges were dropped against Baldwin.

Classic Movie Flashback 'Colors' 1988 with Robert Duvall & Sean Penn

COLORS (1988) distributed by ORION pictures. It stars Robert Duvall and Sean Penn. It was directed by Dennis Hopper. The production budget climbed to $10 million and grossed $46 million at the box office.

The story is simple. Two Los Angeles police officers work to control the rival gangs, "Crips" and "Bloods." The officers are Bob Hodges (Duvall) and Danny "Pac-Man" McGavin (Penn). This is not a stereotypical police drama. It focuses on street gangs and how they function within their perspective territories. In the end - It is still an ongoing struggle between the police and gangs.

"Colors" was groundbreaking for 1988. Rap music was on the rise into the mainstream pop culture. It fills this movie and represents the LA street culture. This has never been done before with a major Hollywood studio. I walked into a movie theater to watch this and was impressed by the subject matter. The Los Angeles gang culture was fascinating to watch. Especially that initiation into an "actual" gang.

Even though it was an R-Rated Movie. That sex scene with a black couple was a little shocking. The bullets and death. I think it was cut down from an X-rating. But, that couple was part of the main story involving a specific gang. That story would come back around to these two officers.

For 2025. "Colors" looks dated but if you watch it closely. Nothing has changed that much except technology and hardcore Rap music.

Classic Movie Flashback 'Mannequin' 1987 with Andrew McCarthy & Kim Cattrall

MANNEQUIN distributed by 20th CENTURY FOX (1987). The production budget climbed to $7 million and grossed $42 million at the box office. It starred Andrew McCarthy and Kim Cattrall.  It was a moderate hit and would become a favorite family film. I remember that this movie was a huge VHS Home Video rental. (My sister rented it way too often). It was released on BluRay Disc in 2015.

The story is simple. Jonathan Switcher (Andrew McCarthy) considers himself an artist. He tries to express himself in jobs which he cannot hold. He gets fired a lot because of this self-expression. Then one day. He lands a job dressing mannequins for window display inside a department store. While he works on clothing for a female mannequin, Ema "Emmy" Hesire (Kim Cattrall). She comes alive right in front of him. And.... She only does it for Jonathan. The comedy ensues when everyone in the department store begins to watch him. That includes the head security guard and his bull dog.

"Mannequin" certainly was a water mark for 1980's fashion and hairdos (Big Hair). The fantasy involves a lonely young male who dreams about a beautiful woman. She just happens to be a mannequin. It's also a family film that kids can enjoy. I think that's why it became a huge video rental seller.

The title song from the movie music soundtrack is called, "Nothing's Gonna Stop us Now" (Starship). It hit number #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop chart. It was also nominated as best original song at the 1988 Academy Awards (Oscar). I remember the music video for the movie rotated a lot on MTV and VH1 cable channels. (We had cable-TV instead of the Internet back then).

Below is a remastered trailer for "Mannequin" 1987.

Review 'Project Silence' is heart pounding thriller!

PROJECT SILENCE distributed by CJ ENM (2024). This was never released in the United States and what a shame. I would've walked into a movie theater to watch it. The production budget climbed to $18.5 million and only grossed $6.3 million world-wide. $4.8 million of that total gross came from South Korea.

I rented it on "YouTube" and was not disappointed.

The story is simple. The South Korean military created a program called, "Project Silence." It involves the control of pit bull dogs with voice activation. Computer chips are inserted in the front of their heads. The program was supposed to protect and serve. It becomes a political lightning rod within the military. The dogs were then trained to kill.

One foggy night on a popular traffic bridge. A number of specific pit bulls are secretly transported across that bridge. The bad weather causes cars to pile up and pedestrians are killed. The truck holding these dogs also crashes. The animals are then set loose. One pit bull slams its head into a solid surface which knocks out that chip. She becomes the leader and plans revenge against the military (smart).

I was totally impressed with the CGI effects. The pit bulls look so real when they are not. They were scary and violent. The bridge collapse had good effects too.

"Project Silence" is a top thriller from South Korea. Check it out if you can.

You can buy or rent the movie on "YouTube."

Classic Podcast '48 Hours' episode 'Anchors Away' with Maureen Maher

48 Hours says, "In November 2004, Tom and Jackie Hawks, an Arizona couple, were killed in a well-thought-out, diabolical plot. Former child actor Skylar Deleon feigned interest in buying the couple’s yacht. During the cruise, the Hawks were forced to sign over ownership of their yacht and power of attorney for their bank accounts."

"Accomplices Alonso Machain (a prison guard) and John Fitzgerald Kennedy (a Los Angeles gang member), helped Deleon kill the couple during a test cruise by tying them to an anchor and throwing them overboard from the yacht off Southern California.

“48 Hours" correspondent Maureen Maher reports.

This classic "48 Hours" episode last aired on 6/12/2010.

NOTE: I remember this episode. Chilling, diabolical and horrific. This was the best investigative report on this double murder. "Dateline" and "20/20" covered this also.

Classic Movie Flashback 'Say Anything' 1989 with John Cusack

SAY ANYTHING distributed by 20th CENTURY FOX (1989). It starred John Cusack and Ione Sky. The director was Cameron Crowe in his directorial debut. The production budget climbed to $16 million and grossed $20 million at the box office.

The story is simple. Lloyd (John Cusack) is entering his senior year in high school. He doesn't know what he wants to do after graduation. Diane (Ione Sky) is the school's valedictorian who nabbed a prestigious fellowship in England which she will attend after the summer. Lloyd finally drums up the courage to ask Diane out on a date. They fall in love, but her dad Jim doesn't like Lloyd. The complications begin.

"Say Anything" wasn't a teen sex comedy like the ones Hollywood cranked-out each year. It dealt with a relationship between a single father, Jim (John Mahoney) and his daughter Diane. She was a smart student who had a bright future. He gave her everything she ever wanted. There was no 1980's movie that dealt with this kind of relationship. It was refreshing and the story reflected high school in the Pacific Northwest.

It was a huge smash with VHS Home Video rentals. In that decade, video cameras were the rage and it shows in this movie. There were no cell phones, iPhones nor the Internet back then. We had "pagers" in 1989. (Hah... Ancient - I know).

"Say Anything" is on BluRay. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.

Below is the 1989 original movie trailer from 20th Century Fox. It looks blurry and faded - but still good.

Below are scenes from the movie "Say Anything" 1989.

This is how you do a Horror Trailer 'Clown in a Cornfield' in theaters May 9, 2025

CLOWN IN A CORNFIELD from SHUDDER (2025). There are Horror Trailers that come out each week online. Some are good ones and some are bad ones. Many have been done before and several try to re-invent the Horror genre.

For me - it all comes down to the trailer and how much it gives away. It is so hard not to give it all away. Why? Because each studio releases at least 3 trailers before it hits movie theaters. The film-going audience then knows what it's all about before buying a ticket. True hardcore fans though will walk into a movie theater anyway. It's because they want to be scared.

"Clown in a Cornfield" has a lot going for it because they never give it all away. The teaser is nearly the same as the first official trailer. It is short, sweet, funny with shades of horror. A fictional clown has become real who enjoys killing teens. The chainsaw bit has been done in thousands of films. But, it's held by a clown who laughs with happy menace... I love it.!!

Classic Podcast '48 Hours' episode 'A Toxic Relationship' 2008

48 Hours says, "On December 3, 1998, Wisconsin police were called to the home of Mark and Julie Jensen. Mark said he found his wife dead in her bed. Initially, police suspected Julie died by suicide, but a letter she had previously written expressed her suspicion that Mark might kill her. A series of toxicology tests revealed there was small amount of ethylene glycol, the main ingredient in antifreeze, in Julie’s stomach."

48 Hours" correspondent Erin Moriarty reports.

This classic episode last aired on 9/6/2008.
