The 2014 SERIAL podcast was downloaded more than 20 million times on the case against Adnan Syed who was convicted in the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee back in 1999. There are 12 riveting episodes covering the murder and trial at every conceivable angle. Sarah Koenig poked many, many holes in the prosecution case and showed us how Adnan's defense lawyer dropped the ball on key witnesses.
Adan has spent 15 years claiming his innocence. A judge at the state of Maryland has granted him a new trial 2016. What this means is that Adnan is no longer a convicted felon. The judge's ruling is over phone expert witnesses on the cell tower "pings" that could place Adnan where Hae Min Lee was strangled to death. Or it could not place him there. Her body was dumped in a shallow grave in a Baltimore Park. If Adnan is set free. Then, who killed Hae Min Lee? It's a mystery because of the dark and shady characters Adnan dealt with at the time of Hae Min's murder.
