1989 Mystery surrounds War Criminal in 'Music Box' with Jessica Lange
MUSIC BOX from TRI-STAR PICTURES (1989). It was not a box office hit. It grabbed only $6 million in the U.S. It would later become a moderate success on VHS home video rental. Jessica Lange recieved an Oscar nomination as Best Actress.
In the 1980's - War Criminals who committed atrocities against Jewish people were "outed" and charged with "crimes." After World War II (1945). Many had settled into communites around the world including the U.S.
"Music Box" is loosely based on a true story about one war criminal from the country of Hungary.
Michael Lazlo had lied on his immigration papers 37 years before. He married and had two kids in the U.S. His daughter Ann Talbot (Jessica Lange) became a criminal lawyer. The name of Michael Lazlo was known by Hungarian Jews as "Mishka." The former commander of the "Arrow Cross" death squad. He tortured and killed Jewish families. There are several men named Michael Lazlo in the U.S.
Ann decides to defend her father in court before an appointed Jewish Judge. To see if there is a case to prosecute Michael by a jury. Ann does her job well in the defense. However - The testimony of Hungarian Jews who were tortured by "Mishka" brought reasonable doubt. Ann has her own questions, but she's got a job to do.
I will not give anything away.... Ann takes a trip to Hungary and visits a specific river. It was where Jewish blood had flowed during the War. Does she find the truth in the land of her ancestors?

1989 Mystery-Thriller 'Sea of Love' has great chemistry between Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin
SEA OF LOVE from UNIVERSAL PICTURES (1989). The production budget of this mystery thriller climbed to $19 million. It hit $110 million at the world-wide box office. It stars Al Pacino, Ellen Barkin and John Goodman.
New York City. There is a serial killer on the loose who targets men. These male victims had answered newspaper single "Want-Ads" from a woman. She looks for a "mate", but ends up killing them.
(This was long before the Internet when people communicated by only landline telephones and newspapers. Ancient - I know).
An alcoholic police detective (Pacino) is assigned to the case. Him and his partner (Goodman) place an Advetisement in those single "Want-Ads" to flesh out the female killer. A cool blonde (Barkin) answers the Ad and she becomes attracted to the lead detective. Is she the killer?.... Meanwhile, another man is murdered.
I won't give anything away.... There is a surprise at the end. I love a good mystery. Check it out on Blu-Ray so that you won't miss a clue.

1985 excellent murder mystery 'Jagged Edge' with Glenn Close
JAGGED EDGE from COLUMBIA PICTURES (1985). The average movie ticket price was $3.55. The production climbed to $15 million. It became a box office hit and topped $40 million in the U.S.
Sony Pictures announced in 2018 that Halle Berry would recreate the Glenn Close role in a remake. That has never materialized. (IMO. Leave the classic 1980's movie alone.).
Jagged Edge -- A beautiful socialite is savagely killed inside of her bedroom. She was tied up and both of her nipples were cut off. All before she was stabbed to death by a hunting knife - with a jagged edge. The socialite's husband is accused of killing her who is soon arrested for her murder.
An aggressive defense female-attorney takes on the case. She is seduced by the husband who begins to look innocent. The intense courtroom trial unfolds in his favor. He is also the beneficiary of the wife's life insurance and all of her loaded assets.
I can't give anything away... Watch closely because there are twists and turns that make this a captivating mystery.
Back in 1985 - film audiences wanted to know who was shot and killed at the end. It was a male who wore a specific mask. The filmmakers wanted the audience to "make up their own minds" about who the real killer was.
It is best to watch it on Blu-Ray because each scene has a mystery. I love this film. Check it out.
