FLASHDANCE from PARAMOUNT (1983). Studio executives sold 25% of the movie rights before the film's release date (April 15, 1983). Previews didn't go well and everyone thought it would become a flop. That included its' director Adrian Lyne who turned it down twice. But - him and his editors trimmed off 20 minutes to make it less "bad." That was a good thing.
It is 40 years later and "Flashdance" proved everyone wrong. It became the 3rd highest grossing film of 1983. It grabbed $201 million at the worldwide box office. It also nabbed $90 million in the United States. The cultural impact is still reverberating in 2023.
The film received 4 Oscar nominations (editing/cinematography/best original songs with 2). "Flashdance: What a Feeling" sung and co-written by Irene Cara won Best Original Song. The soundtrack album would go onto sell a massive $20 million records worldwide.
Critics hated the movie and called it one long music video. But, audiences fell in love with it. Cable television was growing and Music television (MTV) created videos of original songs by musical artists. "Flashdance" was a surprise hit and the studio threw together clips from the film and inserted them without the original artists. MTV rotated those videos in a 24-hour cycle - for months.
Hollywood is turning the film into a TV-series and the movie will be re-released into theaters in April of 2023.
Paramount Home Video just dropped the 40th Anniversary Edition of "Flashdance" on 4K BluRay.
Below is the Original Movie Trailer from 1983. It was pushed hard by the music soundtrack and the youthfulness of its' star Jennifer Beals.
