Classic Movie Flashback 'Sixteen Candles' 1984 with Molly Ringwald

SIXTEEN CANDLES distributed by UNIVERSAL pictures. The production budget climbed to $6.5 million and grossed $26.3 million at the box office. It was considered a hit film that was written & directed by John Hughes. He would be known as "the" teen director of the 1980's.

The story surrounds Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald) who is about to turn 16-years-old. It would be her "sweet sixteen" birthday which is a special milestone in a girl's life. The special day comes and her family forgets about it. Meanwhile, she has a crush on a high school senior, Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling). Samantha doesn't know how to approach him. She is also chased by a geek named Farmer Ted (Anthony Michael Hall) who is her age. His crazy antics "drive" her crazy.

This teen comedy launched the career of Molly Ringwald who worked a lot throughout the 1980's. She is mostly remembered for "Sixteen Candles" that became more popular when released on VHS home video. I missed it in theaters but rented it on video. It's one of those teen comedies that you watch a lot until you grow into your 20's. It certainly was a cut above all the other teen sex movies of that era.
