AMERICAN PRIMEVAL on NET-FLIX (2025). The 6-Part Western Series is now streaming online. Mark L. Smith is Executive Producer/Writer/Creator. It was directed by Peter Berg.
If anyone knows me. I love Westerns and "American Primeval" is absolutely the best in the "genre." I Binge watched the whole series in one sitting and was completely transfixed.
The story is simple. Sara Rowell (Betty Gilpin) and her son Jacob Pratt (Dane DeHaan) are traveling West to seek out her husband. She is wanted for robbery and murder. A bounty hunter is not far behind her. Isaac (Taylor Kitsch) is a loner who is also a western guide. As Sara and Jacob flee an attack by wild Indians plus renegades. Isaac is forced to help them.
It is 1857 and the West is still "untamed." Isaac, Sarah and Jacob literally "fight" to get where they need to go. Fur traders, white settlers, the Army and Mormon groups struggle to claim the land. The Native tribes are being pushed onto reservations. They still want to be "free" which no longer exists.
Violence runs throughout this Western and it is non-stop. It is truly the Wild West. Director Peter Berg opens up the landscape and shows us the unsympathetic nature. The cold winds, heavy snow, pouring rain and wild rivers. I was also impressed with the costume design. The clothing was of that "era." From Isaac's animal fur winter coat, to the native women and their coyote fur covers. It didn't look fake at all in that HD camera.
I hate CGI effects unless it is used well. There was no CGI in this western. The only special effects was the shooting of Indian arrows. Even the blood on human cuts, bruises and injuries was so "real."
This was a great 1857 Western experience.!!!
