AMADEUS distributed by ORION pictures (1984). It was directed by Milos Foreman. The movie is based on the 1979 play written by Peter Shaffer who adapted it for the screen. The 1823 period piece grabbed $90 million at the world wide box office. It also won 8 Academy Awards (Oscar) including Best Picture (1985).
This movie is my number #1 pick of the 1980's. I cannot recall how many times I've seen it in theaters. Then, I watched it on VHS Home Video. I think it is a great "gem" of a film. I recall when I was performing in college "theatre" back in 1985. Every actor was doing scenes from this film.
The story is simple. Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham) claims that he murdered the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce). Salieri had also believed that he was the greatest composer in Europe. That is until he met Wolfgang who was a vulgar and wild piano player. His music transcended from the written page and captured the world. Salieri was so jealous that he plotted to kill Wolfgang by wearing a black mask resembling his overbearing father. It pushed Mozart over the edge who had written the most beautiful music. It was something Salieri could only dream about.
Check it out on BluRay. You will not be disappointed.
