Classic Movie Flashback 'Private Benjamin' 1980 with Goldie Hawn

PRIVATE BENJAMIN distributed by WARNER BROS. (1980). It starred Goldie Hawn who also served as a producer on the film. The production budget climbed to $9.2 million and grossed $69 million at the box office. It was considered a smash and was a huge VHS Home Video Rental.

Note: Home video became popular by the 1980's. It revolutionized the entertainment industry from TV, movies, games to pornography. Americans stayed home to watch everything instead of going out. VHS recorders became a "boom" industry. Hollywood cashed-in with films and TV shows on videocassette. This was long before the Internet.

"Private Benjamin" showed life in the "Army" from a female perspective. After the movie was released. A lot of young women joined the Army forces.

The story is simple. Judith Benjamin (Goldie Hawn) is a spoiled blonde who gets married. Her husband dies on their wedding night and Judith falls into a depression. She wants to change her life and meets an Army recruiter. After she signs her name on the dotted line. Judith realizes her mistake but cannot quit. It changes her life and she grows into a strong independent woman.

"Private Benjamin" is considered a comedy because of Goldie Hawn. She is hilarious in this movie and it nabbed her an Oscar nomination as Best Actress. Eileen Brennan (Captain Doreen Lewis) was also nominated as Best Supporting Actress. Nancy Meyers, Charles Shyer and Harvey Miller were Oscar nominated for Best Screenplay.

The film spawned a TV series that lasted from 1981-1983. Eileen Brennan reprised her role for the series.
