LONESOME DOVE written by LARRY McMURTRY (1985). Net-Flix will produce a new series based on the popular western novel. No date has been set for filming.
It was adapted into a 4-part TV mini-series for CBS. It premiered in February of 1989. The first night hauled a massive 44 million TV viewership. It had an all-star cast led by Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones and Angelica Huston.
The western was revived on television after a long dry spell.
The story is simple. Two former Texas Rangers decide to have one last cattle drive from Texas to Montana. Along the way. They gain and lose friendships. Old lovers emerge and truth is revealed. They also face wild Indians and other killers. The drive north is brutal but worthwhile.
The 1989 TV-mini-series still stands as the best western ever filmed. It now streams on the internet over many channels. The best way to watch is on Blu-Ray (IMO).
There was a sequel, "Return to Lonesome Dove" that wasn't as popular nor as acclaimed. The original cast didn't return because the writing wasn't as good as the first series. There have been several "Dove" TV series adapted without much success.
All I can say to Net-Flix is, "You better have a damn good script to equal the 1989 original."
