My favorite film of Max Von Sydow is "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (1965). He was cast as Jesus. It was nominated for 5 Oscars, but didn't win. It grossed $15 million at the box office after an over-budget of $20 million. It was said that even though George Stevens directed the film. He had help by other famous directors of that era. The reason was that Stevens went over budget and 20th Century Fox dropped it. United Artists picked it up and released the 3-hour epic which was originally 4 hours.
On the DVD release. Max Von Sydow was interviewed about his portrayal of Jesus. Even though the film didn't make its' money back. It remains one of the best movies about Jesus since 1965. Stevens was a powerful force in Hollywood after winning several best director "Oscars." Many movie stars at the time, wanted to appear in the Epic film. That included John Wayne. Check it out on DVD for Max Von Sydow's performance.
