TOOTSIE from COLUMBIA pictures (1982). It starred Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Lange. The production budget climbed to $21 million and grossed $241 million at the world-wide box office. It went onto become the 2nd highest grossing movie of that year. (Movie Ticket Price $2.94).
The story surrounds Michael (Hoffman) who is a difficult actor. No one wants to hire him. There is an opening for an older woman on a popular day time soap opera. Michael creates an actress named Dorothy and auditions for the role. He lands the part and Dorothy becomes a popular female character on the show.
I don't think the film could be made in 2024. The political correctness would kill the idea of a man dressing up in drag to portray a woman. All of the stereotypes could be an outrage from the LGBT community. (Despite the success of RuPaul's "Drag Race" which is a reality TV series competition).
"Tootsie" was a box office smash and earned 10 Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor for Hoffman. Jessica Lange won the Best Supporting actress Oscar. This kind of romantic comedy was a throw back to the 1940s.
Hoffman is fantastic as Dorothy. You forget about him under all of that make up. You believe in Dorothy as a true feminist.
