MY LEFT FOOT distributed by PALACE pictures (1989). The production budget was $600,000 and it grossed $14.7 million at the box office. It won critical acclaim and starred Daniel Day Lewis (Christy Brown). He won the Oscar as Best Actor for the movie. Brenda Fricker (Fagan Brown) portrayed Christy's mother. She won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
The movie is based on the life of Christy Brown (Day-Lewis). He was born with Cerebral Palsy and can only move his left foot. By the use of that foot. Christy learned how to paint. He later wrote books and let nothing stop him from expressing his artistic talent. He lived in poverty, but his family loved him completely. Especially his mother Fagan who let Christy blossom through his left foot. It is "extraordinary" to watch as he paints with his toes.
This certainly wasn't a feel-good movie. It was about a man with a disability who overcame it to "live." The audience never feels sorry for Christy either. He was a complicated male living in a complicated world.
"My Left Foot" is on BluRay. Check it out. You will not be disappointed.
