The 89th annual Academy Awards (Oscar) will air Live on ABC-TV Sunday Feb. 26, 2017. It will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. The Oscar nominations were announced today (Tuesday) Jan. 24th. The musical, "La La Land" grabbed 14 nominations including Best Picture. It ties with "All About Eve" (1950) and "Titanic" (1997) with the most nominations in Oscar history.
The "Oscar So White" controversy of 2016 had no people of color in the major acting categories. Black performers have landed a total of 6 actor and actress nominations in 2017. Nowhere on the list is, "The Birth of a Nation" which was hailed last year as the Oscar front-runner. It received critical acclaim and snatched a $17 million distribution deal at "Sundance." It was written and directed by Nate Parker. Fox-Searchlight was preparing to promote the film before its' theatrical release in October 2016. Parker's 1999 rape allegations and acquittal surfaced in the media and controversy may have damaged the movie. Its' production budget was $8 million and it nabbed $15 million at North American theaters. Parker did receive a Directors Guild Award (DGA) nomination for a first-time director 2016.
