'The Nice Guys' is throwback to great 'buddy' films not seen anymore

THE NICE GUYS from WARNER BROS. According to “The Numbers” that tracks box office receipts. “Guys” nabbed a projected $36 million in the U.S. It grabbed $21 million at Foreign markets which brought its' worldwide total to $57 million. The DVD and BluRay sales reached $4 million. The production budget climbed to $50 million.

There are no more “buddy” pictures these days in Hollywood. “The Nice Guys” changed that last year (2016) with Russell Crowe (Jackson Healy) and Ryan Gosling (Holland March). It is 1977 and Jackson is a muscle man who gives messages with his fists. Holland is a stumbling private detective who is smarter than he actually believes. Both men are thrown together by a missing daughter in Los Angeles. She leads these “nice” guys into the porn industry when the voluptuous “Misty Mountains” is murdered.

I watched this on BluRay and couldn't stop laughing. The screenplay was fresh and original set during the days of “disco.” The music was great. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe make a great team, but not a comedy team. Their personalities don't mesh and they're forced to work together. The comedy comes from their very different characters reacting to normal situations and each other. I thought it was refreshing. Check it out if you can.
