'Edge of Darkness' BBC TV 1985 Fight over Plutonium in 'Fusion'

EDGE OF DARKNESS from BBC TV (1985). The final episode is called, “Fusion.” This 6-part TV mini-series was a critical and ratings hit at the time.

Inspector Ronald Craven ends up in the hospital who has a few weeks to live. He had been exposed to radioactive materials inside “Northmoor.” CIA operative Darius Jedburgh disappeared with blocks of plutonium and he too will soon die. He was set up by men working for England’s “Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” They didn’t believe he would make it out of the nuclear waste facility alive. The CIA wants the plutonium too.

Ronald realizes that his daughter’s fight to protect the environment was worth it. Even if Emma had to die for the cause and he too risked his life for the truth. Plutonium is illegal and had been sought after by several countries including the U.S. Loads of money was transferred secretly to get a hold of a deadly weapon. (This was the 1980’s and the height of the cold war between Russia and the U.S.). Jedburgh holds the blocks of plutonium that everyone wants.

The earth still grows its’ flowers and the rivers still stream clear water. Plutonium is made, but it is human life that pays the price with lives killed or contaminated by a possible nuclear weapon.
