'Mike's Murder' 1984 L.A. drug world engulfs Betty in death

MIKE’S MURDER from WARNER BROTHERS PICTURES. (1984). It was released on DVD in 2009 by Warner Archive. Film director, James Bridges, specifically wrote this movie for Debra Winger who was “hot” at the time. What is seen in the movie trailer is mostly cut from the final production. Bridges had to re-edit the film after “Warner Bros.” and the test audiences disliked it. Nonetheless, it made $1 million at the U.S., box office. 

(Computers and cell phones were in its’ infancy back in 1984. People relied upon outdoor pay phones, indoor rotary phones and the regular mail delivered by carriers. They also got their news only by radio and printed newspapers. VHS home tapes were on the rise long before DVD). 

“Mike’s Murder.” Betty (Debra Winger) is a Los Angeles bank teller. She was taught tennis lessons by Mike who happens to sell drugs on the side. They had a one-night-stand and remained friends for two years. He finally tells her that other drug dealers are searching for him. She wants to help, but he’s been murdered. 

Betty decides to find out how Mike was killed. She soon discovers that he had other secrets and that the L.A., drug world is so much bigger than her. It touches her life and she’s in danger. When she finally discovers the whole truth. The drug world passes her by and she realizes that she likes living on the edge.
